Romney to court donors in Israel before heading to Poland for final leg of trip

JERUSALEM - Mitt Romney will spend his final hours in Jerusalem courting wealthy donors before heading to Poland, the final leg of a three-nation overseas tour designed to bolster the Republican presidential candidate's foreign policy credentials.

Romney, having publicly pledged "a solemn duty and moral imperative" to protect Israel, is scheduled to host a Monday morning fundraiser at the luxurious King David Hotel with American citizens willing to pay at least $50,000 per person.

Standing on Israeli soil for the first time as the Republican Party's presumptive presidential nominee, Romney on Sunday declared Jerusalem to be the capital of the Jewish state and said the United States has promised never to "look away from our passion and commitment to Israel." He hopes to defeat President Barack Obama in the November general election.

Romney's campaign says his trip abroad, which began in England last week, is aimed at improving the former Massachusetts governor's foreign policy experience through a series of meetings with foreign leaders. The candidate has largely avoided direct criticism of Obama while on foreign soil.

The Jerusalem fundraiser, however, is a political event that could raise millions of dollars for Romney's campaign fund. It marks at least the second finance event during his tour. The first, in London, attracted about 250 people to a $2,500 per person fundraiser.

Both presidential candidates have aggressively courted American donors living abroad, a practice that is legal and has been used for decades.

Several donors were among those gathered in Jerusalem Sunday for Romney's speech.

Romney's declaration that Jerusalem is Israel's capital was keeping with claims made by Israeli governments for decades, even though the United States, like other nations, maintains its embassy in Tel Aviv. He did not say if he would order the embassy moved if he wins the White House, but strongly suggested so in a CNN interview.

"My understanding is the policy of our nation has been a desire to move our embassy ultimately to the capital (Jerusalem)," he said, adding, "I would only want to do so and to select the timing in accordance with the government of Israel."

His remarks on the subject during his speech drew a standing ovation from his audience, which included Sheldon Adelson, the American businessman who has promised to donate more than $100 million to help defeat Obama.

Adelson was among a several donors who flew to the region for a day of sightseeing with Romney in addition to private meetings with top Israeli officials.

A group of donors also met with a top aide to President Benjamin Netanyahu, one donor said on the condition of anonymity to discuss private meetings. After the meeting, the donors toured other historical sites in Jerusalem.

Romney met with Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu and other leaders before the speech. He also visited the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site, where he was mobbed by worshippers. In addition, Romney met with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

In his remarks, Romney steered clear of overt criticism of Obama, even though he said the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran "has only become worse" in the past five years.

In an unspoken rebuttal to Obama and other critics, Romney said, "It is sometimes said that those who are the most committed to stopping the Iranian regime from securing nuclear weapons are reckless and provocative and inviting war.

"The opposite is true. We are the true peacemakers," he said.

The former Massachusetts governor also stepped back from a comment a senior aide made a short while before the speech.

"We recognize Israel's right to defend itself," he told the audience. Earlier, the aide, Dan Senor, previewed the speech for reporters, saying that "if Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing the capability, the governor would respect that decision."

Romney flew to the Middle East from Britain, where he caused a stir by questioning whether officials there were fully prepared for the Olympic Games. A stop in Poland will complete his trip.

Four years ago, then-U.S. Sen. Barack Obama also visited Israel as a candidate, part of a five-nation trip meant to establish his own foreign policy credentials.

A goal of Romney's overseas trip is to demonstrate his confidence on the world stage, but his stop in Israel also was designed to appeal to evangelical voters at home and to cut into Obama's support among Jewish voters and donors. A Gallup survey of Jewish voters released Friday showed Obama with a 68-25 edge over Romney.

Romney and other Republicans have said Obama is insufficiently supportive of Israel, noting statements the president has made about settlements and his handling of evident Iranian attempts to develop nuclear weapons.

Tehran is closer to developing nuclear weapons capability than before, Romney said. "Preventing that outcome must be our highest national security priority."

In a March speech before a pro-Israel lobby in Washington, Obama warned of "loose talk of war" that serves only to drive up oil prices. "Now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in and sustain the broad international coalition we have built," he said at the time.

Romney's comments at the Monday fundraiser will be open to a small group of reporters. A Romney spokesman previously said the campaign would block media coverage, which is customarily allowed at events in public spaces.

Mary-Louise Parker: 'Weeds' finale 'beautiful'

Frederick M. Brown / Getty Images

By Kristin Dos Santos, E! Online

Don't expect Nancy Botwin and the gang to live happily ever after, "Weeds" fans.?

The critically acclaimed Showtime comedy is wrapping up production on its eighth ??and last ??season this week, and the cast met with reporters to give scoop on the very end.?

"I just cried when I read it," Mary-Louise Parker said of the final script. "It was beautiful. I don't know that it was really satisfying except that it was an end. She [creator Jenji Kohan] managed to bring things together in a way that isn't necessarily a happily-ever-after thing, but there is hope. There is benediction. The finale is beautifully written and I hope that it lives up to what she wrote."?

Everything you need to know about the 'Weeds' season premiere?

Wanna know who the breakout star from the series finale will be??

Hunter Parrish, at least according to Parker. "I texted [Hunter] to tell him," Mary-Louise said. "He shot a scene in the finale that is one of the best pieces of acting I've ever seen."?

Mary-Louise had this take on Nancy Botwin's greatest legacy: "She's fairly indomitable and guileless. She just continues to make the wrong choices. Her heart's usually in the right place and she just can't be defeated. She keeps trying. To me that's what's appealing to her. That's what I like about her."?

Melanie Griffith is coming to 'Raising Hope'

And naturally, it was Justin Kirk (Andy) who gave the most laugh-worthy moment of the panel. When Hunter praised Justin for his memorable masturbation monologue (in which Andy taught the youngest Botwin boy to masturbate), Justin quipped, "I'm available now to teach your children." Duly noted.?

Will you tune in for the "Weeds" finale? Tell us about it on Facebook.

Enbridge races to clean up Wisconsin oil spill, restart line

GRAND MARSH, Wisconsin (Reuters) - Canada's Enbridge Inc. on Sunday raced to repair a major pipeline that spilled more than 1,000 barrels of oil in a Wisconsin field, provoking fresh ire from Washington over the latest in a series of leaks.

The spill on Friday -- almost two years to the day after a ruptured Enbridge line fouled part of the Kalamazoo River in Michigan -- has forced the closure of a major conduit for Canadian light crude shipments to U.S. refiners and threatens further damage the reputation of a company that launched a more than $3 billion expansion program just two months ago.

Enbridge said it intended to begin repairs to Line 14 late on Saturday after making "excellent progress" in clean-up, allowing for visual inspection of the line. But it still did not know what had caused the incident and provided no estimate on when the 318,000 barrels-per-day Line 14 would resume service.

An official with the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) said two inspectors were at the site on Sunday, and that all of the pooled oil had been cleaned up.

"The line has been uncovered to begin removing the failed section and send it to a metallurgical lab for examination," PHMSA spokesman Damon Hill said.

Officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are also on site, Enbridge said in a statement.

An image of the area posted on Enbridge's website showed a patch of damp, blackened earth near a stand of trees about one-third the size of a football field. It found some oil on two small farm ponds, but said they did not connect to moving waterways and that drinking wells did not seem to be affected.

Although the spill appeared to be relatively small and quickly contained, it comes at a delicate time for Enbridge, which suffered another leak in Alberta, Canada, a month ago and endured a scathing report from U.S. safety regulators over its handling of the Michigan incident in 2010, with employees likened to the "Keystone Kops" for their bungled response.

"Enbridge is fast becoming to the Midwest what BP was to the Gulf of Mexico, posing troubling risks to the environment," U.S. Representative Ed Markey, the top Democrat on the Natural Resources Committee, said in a statement.

"The company must be forthcoming about this entire incident, and deserves a top-to-bottom review of their safety culture, procedures and standards," said Markey, an outspoken critic of increasing imports of Canada's heavy oil sands crude.

Just two months ago, Enbridge kicked off one of the most sweeping expansions in its history, announcing a multibillion-dollar series of projects aimed at moving western Canada and North Dakota oil to Eastern refineries and eliminating costly bottlenecks in the U.S. Midwest.

Line 14 is a 24-inch diameter pipe that was installed in 1998, making it a relatively new line. Enbridge said it had been inspected twice in the past five years.

TWO LANDOWNERS, ONE HOUSE 'COVERED'

In most cases, smaller pipeline leaks can be repaired quickly, although regulators may require significant work if they find any cause for alarm. Following the leak in Michigan two years ago -- which spilled roughly 15 times more oil than the Wisconsin leak if initial estimates of the Friday incident prove correct -- one line was shut for more than two months.

Enbridge said two landowners had been affected and that one family had been relocated for their safety and comfort, but that most of the spill was restricted to the pipeline right-of-way. It kept its estimate of the spill at around 1,200 barrels -- about as much as would fit in six very large oil tanker trucks.

"The house right next to where the pipeline broke got covered with oil," said Patrick Swadish, who lives about a mile northwest of the spill site in a rural area of mostly farmland, some 80 miles north of the college town of Madison.

Oil trucks, Enbridge vehicles and about a dozen crews were working in the area, which had been cordoned off by sheriff deputies. Local law enforcement officials said they had been told it may take up to 30 days to clean the area.

Enbridge also said it had briefly shut down two larger adjacent lines -- the 400,000 bpd Line 61 and the 670,000 bpd Line 6A -- but both were pumping again within a day. Together with Line 14, they form the backbone of Lakehead, a 2.5 million bpd network that is the main route for Canadian exports.

Another line, the 180,000 bpd Line 13, which carries diluents from Chicago to Edmonton, Alberta, would be restarted once it was confirmed the release had not had an impact on it, it said.

PREVIOUS SPILLS

Just weeks ago, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board blasted Enbridge's handling of the July 2010 rupture of its Line 6B near Marshall, Michigan, which led to more than 20,000 barrels of crude leaking into the Kalamazoo River.

The NTSB said it found a complete breakdown of company safety measures, and that Enbridge employees performed like "Keystone Kops" trying to contain it. The rupture went undetected for 17 hours.

U.S. pipeline regulators fined it $3.7 million for the spill, their largest ever penalty.

The incidents, plus the most recent spill in Alberta, have caused furor just as the company seeks approval for its C$6 billion Northern Gateway pipeline to Canada's West Coast amid staunch opposition from environmental groups and native communities that warn against oil spills.

Apple's Twitter investment is not to be, say sources

Apple had been considering a 'strategic investment' in Twitter but negotiations apparently ended with no deal.

The first of the rumoured talks actually took place over a year ago, according to Bloomberg's sources, presumably around the time Apple was heavily integrating Twitter into iOS and Mountain Lion.

The cosy chats between the two companies ended without any cheque signing because both were happy with the aforementioned integration.

No dice

Last week the New York Times reported that a more recent discussion also took place, according to its source, with Apple looking to pump a significant number of millions into Twitter, hiking the social network's value up to $10 billion (?6 billion).

The reason for Apple's interest in Twitter is down to its lack of an in-house social network ? Google has Google+, Facebook has Facebook, even Amazon has user reviews and marketplaces, while Apple doesn't really have any of these.

Twitter is the only social network to be heavily integrated into Mac OS X Mountain Lion, allowing users to post status updates and share media without opening a separate app.

Facebook, meanwhile, is still absent from the desktop software and only made it into iOS 6 after Twitter had made itself at home in iOS 5.

Microsoft trumpets Windows Phone 7 numbers on first birthday

Happy first birthday, Windows Phone 7! One year on, and the fledgling mobile operating system has 36,000 active developers in its AppHub community, 1.5 million downloads of its Developer Tools, and 11,500 apps in its Marketplace.

Microsoft is quick to take a couple shots at competitors? app stores, beating its chest about not re-counting tanslations of an app or ?lite? apps, ?increasing tonnage? by supporting apps from other mobile platforms, and not listing wallpapers as a category.

That?s all fine and dandy, but we spend a lot of time sifting through WP7 app feeds ? and we?re still not seeing a lot of awesome apps on the platform. We think a few marquee apps would?ve made a pretty nice first birthday present ? along with a much smoother update process for WP7 users.

Lochte wins 400 IM final for first US gold

LONDON (AP) ? Five things to know about Saturday, Day 1 of the London Olympics:

?Lochte wins first U.S. gold, Phelps fourth in 400 IM.

?Brits struggle in cycling as Vinokourov wins road race.

?Serena, Federer advance at All England Club.

?U.S. men lead surprising Britain in gymnastics qualifying.

?Hey, there's the new Bond Girl! It's the queen.

___

Ryan Lochte won the 400-meter individual medley, China collected a couple of gold medals and Australia set an Olympic record while winning the women's 400-meter freestyle relay.

Oh, and Michael Phelps went without a medal in an Olympic race for the first time since 2000.

It was quite the opening night at the pool.

After barely qualifying for the final, Phelps struggled to a fourth-place finish and was denied his 17th career Olympic medal. When it was done, he could barely get out of the pool.

Lochte took the gold with a time of 4 minutes, 5.18 seconds. Brazil's Thiago Pereira (4:08.86) settled for silver, while Japan's Kosuke Hagino (4:08.94) claimed the bronze.

"I think I'm kind of in shock right now," Lochte said. As for his defeated rival Phelps, "I know he gave it everything he had. That's all you can ask for."

The women's 400 individual medley went to 16-year-old Ye Shiwen, who set a world record with a time of 4:28.43. It was the third mark to fall since high-tech bodysuits were banned at the end of 2009.

American Elizabeth Beisel took silver and China's Li Xuanxu grabbed the bronze.

Sun Yang flirted with a world record in the men's 400 freestyle. He took gold in 3:40.14, just off the mark of 3:40.07 by Germany's Paul Biedermann in a rubberized suit three years ago.

South Korea's Park Tae-hwan was the silver medalist in 3:42.06, and American Peter Vanderkaay took the bronze in 3:44.69.

Australia finished the 400-free relay in 3:33.15, Netherlands won the silver and the Americans got bronze.

The U.S. finish was enough to deliver a 12th medal to Natalie Coughlin, who matched Dara Torres and Jenny Thompson for most decorated U.S. female Olympian. Coughlin swam in the morning prelims, but wasn't used in the evening; everyone who swims on a relay gets a medal.

After hosting a dazzling opening ceremony Friday night, Britain got off to a shaky start on the first full day of action when favored cycling star Mark Cavendish finished 28th in the road race.

Kazakhstan's Alexander Vinokourov, who has said he will retire from cycling after the games, won gold. Rigoberto Uran of Colombia took silver, and Alexander Kristoff of Norway won a mass sprint for the bronze.

"The guys all sat there in the tent absolutely spent. We did everything we could," Cavendish said afterward. "We didn't expect any help. We rode the race we wanted to ride."

Wimbledon champions Roger Federer and Serena Williams each won their opening matches ? one struggled, one didn't.

Federer, a four-time Olympian, overcame a jittery patch and beat Alejandro Falla of Colombia 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. The top-ranked Swiss star was a point from victory in the second set, then lost three of his next four service games. But he recovered in time to avoid the upset.

U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama watched from the front row of Williams' box as the fourth-seeded American beat former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-3, 6-1 on Centre Court.

Cavendish and his troubles aside, his countrymen got off to a terrific start in men's gymnastics ? almost as good as the United States.

While perennial powerhouses China and Japan bobbled and wobbled their way through qualifying, the Americans proved they really do have the goods to contend for the gold medal. They didn't count a single fall, and their final score of 275.342 is almost three points ahead of Britain.

Britain, which was only good enough to send two gymnasts to Beijing four years ago, got a spectacular pommel horse by Louis Smith and finished with a score of 272.420.

"It's just a dream competition really," said Smith, the British captain.

Fresh from her star turn as the latest Bond Girl, Queen Elizabeth II returned to Olympic Park for an encore.

The queen visited with British Olympians in the athletes village and rode to the top of the 377-foot Orbit tower beside the stadium, where on Friday night she officially opened the 2012 Games. Her husband, Prince Philip, and London Mayor Boris Johnson accompanied her.

In describing her role in the opening ceremony, created by director Danny Boyle, Johnson said the queen had told him she was "very, very impressed with the success of her first film appearance, her first dramatic venture. It was very funny and seems to have gone down particularly well with the international audiences."

The show-stopping moment featured the queen making her acting debut alongside Daniel Craig, who portrayed James Bond in a film beamed into the stadium.

The rest of the Olympic action Saturday:

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Maybe it was first-game nerves or a hangover from the opening ceremony. But the U.S. had to overcome a sloppy performance to post an 81-56 victory over Croatia in its first game.

Coach Geno Auriemma had said he was hoping the Americans could play a style of basketball that would be entertaining and help grow the women's game internationally. That didn't happen.

"We have five players who have never been in the Olympics before, so they are going to be nervous. Everybody was a little nervous," Auriemma said. "We're better than we showed, but I don't know that we're going to be great right off the bat."

The U.S., which got back to its hotel at 3 a.m. after the kickoff party, struggled for the first three quarters before winning its 34th consecutive Olympic game.

Next up for the Americans is Angola, which lost to Turkey 72-50 in its Olympic debut.

The Czech Republic lost their pool opener, falling to China 66-57. In another early game, Russia rallied past Canada 58-53. France beat Brazil 73-58.

SOCCER

The U.S. women clinched a spot in the quarterfinals and remembered an injured teammate in a 3-0 victory over Colombia.

Megan Rapinoe scored in the 33rd minute for the Americans. After her goal, she reached into her sock and pulled out a birthday message for Ali Krieger, who blew out her knee in a qualifying match in January.

Abby Wambach made it 2-0 in the 74th, and Carli Lloyd scored in the 77th.

Britain wrapped up a spot in the women's quarters with a 3-0 victory against Cameroon. Canada beat South Africa 3-0, Brazil blanked New Zealand 1-0, and Sweden held Women's World Cup champion Japan to a scoreless draw. France beat North Korea 5-0 in the late match at Hampden Park.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

The Olympics' sexiest sport opened with a raucous debut, mixing in a little local flair with all of the more traditional trifles that have made the event one of the most sought-after tickets in London (though Sir Paul McCartney managed to get one for the afternoon session).

A dance team in bathing suits jiggled for the sold-out crowd during timeouts, while rock music nearly drowned out the pealing of Big Ben.

Located just inside the gate used by the queen ? and only the queen ? to ride up to Buckingham Palace, the beach volleyball venue offers views of the London Eye, the Big Ben clock tower and 10 Downing Street.

Americans Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor, who are trying for a third consecutive gold medal, beat Australians Tasmin Hinchley and five-time Olympian Natalie Cook in the final match 21-18, 21-19. The No. 2 U.S. men's team of Sean Rosenthal and Jake Gibb needed just 33 minutes to put away South Africans Freedom Chiya and Grant Goldschmidt.

BOXING

Americans Joseph Diaz Jr. and Terrell Gausha posted impressive victories on the first day of the boxing competition.

Diaz looked sharp in a 19-9 victory over Ukraine bantamweight Pavlo Ishchenko in the tournament's opening bout, while Gausha knocked down Armenian middleweight Andranik Hakobyan twice in the final 7 seconds of his middleweight bout, winning by stoppage with no time on the clock.

Georgian middleweight Merab Turkadze forfeited his evening bout after failing to make weight, allowing Algeria's Amine Mohammed Ouadahi to win by walkover.

TABLE TENNIS

Warren Buffett and Bill Gates will be thrilled when they get the news: 16-year-old American Ariel Hsing is into the second round in Olympic table tennis.

She defeated Yadira Silva of Mexico in four straight games on the opening day. With none of the top 16 players and favored Chinese entering competition until the third round, Hsing made the most of her first Olympic appearance.

Buffett met Hsing when she was only 9 and two years later invited her to play against shareholders at Berkshire Hathaway's annual meeting. She returned earlier this year after winning a spot on the U.S. team and took a few points off Buffett and Gates.

VOLLEYBALL

Destinee Hooker had 21 points and the United States held off late-charging South Korea 3-1 in their opening match.

The fans at Earls Court chanted "Des-tin-ee! Des-tin-ee!" at one point as she dominated in the 25-19, 25-17, 20-25, 25-21 victory.

The U.S., which won the silver medal in Beijing and is ranked No. 1 in the world, jumped out to a 17-11 lead in the first set after one of Hooker's seemingly effortless spikes, helping set the tone for the match.

Kim Yeon-koung had 29 points for South Korea, which rallied in the third set but ultimately fell short.

ARCHERY

Italy won the gold in the men's team event, beating the U.S. by one point on the final shot. It was America's first medal of the games.

Michele Frangilli, Marco Galiazzo and Mauro Nespoli hugged and raised their hands in celebration after the final arrow beat the U.S. 219-218 at Lord's Cricket Ground. It was Italy's first-ever gold in the event.

ROWING

The United States and Germany won heats in the blue-riband men's eight, leaving a host of top crews to vie for places in the final.

Only one crew progresses from each heat. The Germans, unbeaten in three years, finished a half length ahead of Britain at Dorney Lake. Olympic champion Canada came in last in a race fit for the final.

The U.S. beat Australia by a half length to reach Wednesday's final, which should be one of the regatta highlights.

EQUESTRIAN

Australia took the early lead in Olympic equestrian eventing at Greenwich Park, with Germany and the United States close behind.

Half the 50 riders rode their dressage test that starts the three-phase competition, which includes cross-country and show jumping.

In the individual competition, Germany's Ingrid Klimke had a sparkling dressage test to score 39.3 penalty points, followed by teammate Dirk Schrade on King Artus with 39.8 and Mary King of Britain with 40.9 on Imperial Cavalier.

Several teams, including favorites Britain and New Zealand, did not have a complete rotation of three riders, so team standings are still preliminary.

American riders included Boyd Martin of Cochranville, Pa., scoring 50.7 penalty points on Otis Barbotiere; Karen O'Connor of The Plains, Va., earning 48.2 on Mr. Medicott; and Tiana Coudray of Ojai, Calif., with 52.0 on Ringwood Magister.

FENCING

Elisa Di Francisca completed an Italian sweep in the Olympics' individual foil, winning the gold 12-11 in overtime against countrywoman Arianna Errigo.

Errigo beat three-time defending champion Valentina Vezzali 15-12 in the semifinals, denying her Italian teammate a chance to become the first female athlete to win individual gold at four consecutive Olympics.

The 38-year-old Vezzali won a tense battle for bronze, 13-12 against top-ranked Nam Hyun-Hee of South Korea.

JUDO

Sarah Menezes of Brazil and Arsen Galstyan of Russia won the first two golds in the judo competition.

The second-ranked Menezes beat defending Olympic champion Alina Dumitru of Romania in the women's 48-kilogram final. Galstyan defeated one of the 60-kg favorites, Hiroaki Hiroaka of Japan, for his first Olympic medal.

SHOOTING

South Korean marksman Jin Jong-oh won the 10-meter air pistol gold medal, improving on his silver in Beijing. Italian police officer Luca Tesconi won the silver, and Andrija Zlatic of Serbia took the bronze.

Top-ranked Yi Siling of China captured the first gold medal of the Olympics in the women's 10-meter air rifle at Royal Artillery Barracks. Sylwia Bogacka of Poland took the silver for her first major medal, and Yu Dan of China went home with the bronze.

BADMINTON

Former champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia opened his last Olympics with a comfortable 21-8, 21-8 win over Petr Koukal of the Czech Republic in group play.

Other winners included European champion Marc Zwiebler of Germany, Son Wan-ho of South Korea, Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark, and Kevin Cordon of Guatemala, last year's surprise world championship quarterfinalist in the same Wembley Arena.

In women's action, gold medal contender Li Xuerui of China handled Claudia Rivero Modenesi of Peru 21-5, 21-6 in 22 minutes.

No. 6-seeded Juliane Schenk of Germany, Bae Yeon-ju of South Korea, Anastasia Prokopenko of Russia, Susan Egelstaff of Britain, Anu Nieminen of Finland and Neslihan Yigit of Turkey also won their group openers.

HANDBALL

Defending champion Norway lost 24-23 to France in their Group B opener in women's handball.

Three-time Olympic champion Denmark got a victory in Group B, edging Sweden 21-18.

Heat Safety And Your Dog: Keeping Cool - Free Pets to Good Home

The summer heat can bring with it a whole new set of perils for your pet. Heat related conditions are very real and common in canines. Injury, sickness and death caused by extreme heat are nearly always avoidable. Here are some tips to keep your dog cool and out of harm?s way in the dog days of summer.

Do

Do walk your dog in the evening, or early morning when it?s not too hot and your pet will not suffer with heat related conditions. Your dog will rapidly get dehydrated in the heat and the pavement can get painfully hot on their paws. If you haven?t got any choice but to take your dog out in the heat, do not stay out for long and take frequent stops for water. Stay in the shade as much as possible and pay close attention to your dog for evidence of suffering.

Do maintain regular grooming. Your pet will be much more comfortable and less sensitive to heat related sickness if they?ve a nice cool haircut. If you happen to have a long-haired dog, a long, ungroomed coat can feel just like wearing a parka in the middle of the summer. On the flip-side, be careful not to trim the fur too short or your dog can get sunburnt.

Do be on the look-out for insects, especially those that bite and sting. Many dogs will chase bees and wasps and end up on the business end of a stinger. Keep a first aid kit on hand and supervise as much as possible when outside. Fleas and ticks are particularly present during the summer months so it?s really important to stay current with heartworm shots and flea and tick prevention.

Do Not

Do not leave your dog alone in the car. This is a gigantic no-no and yet each year you hear about more cases of dogs suffering and dying due to this sort of failure. It?s a widely known fact it takes only minutes for your parked car to turn into an oven. Even with the windows cracked it can be exceedingly uncomfortable and even lethal for your pet. It?s best to leave your dog at home in the air-conditioning. If you have to go out without your pet leave them in a cool part of the house. You can use freestanding, custom or extra-wide pet gates to create a penned area or block a wide opening in your house to keep your dog cool.

Don?t let your dog ride in the back of a pick-up truck. This is risky for your pet at any time of the year. A single bump or jolt can send your dog flying, causing injury or death. In the heat of the summer, the sun beating down on your dog, exposed in the back can be lethal. It is never worth the risk.

Nine things that affect your car's resale value

Mileage and mechanical condition count, but resale value hinges on a whole lot more.

By High Gear Media Staff,?Guest blogger / July 25, 2012

A worker paints price tags in the used car lot at a Chrysler car dealership in Toronto in this 2009 file photo. The resale value of your used car hinges on many factors, not just how well it runs.

Either way, both drivers face the reality of resale value, and it can be either a pleasant surprise or a cold wake-up call.

Resale value is something of a black art, mixing a car's age, its mileage, general condition, and equipment levels with less straightforward factors like popularity or supply. Most of the things that bring down resale value happen over time--but some of the features and fundamentals that can boost resale value or knock it down can be determined before you even leave the showroom.

It's simple to see how regular maintenance pays off in the end, for example--but you could be in for a surprise if you've chosen some features that weren't common just a decade ago.

To stay in control of resale value, know how these factors affect it:

Brand.?It's the painful truth for fans of some exotic brands, or even some popular nameplates known less for reliability. The first name of a vehicle can have a tremendous effect on its resale value, regardless of the condition or quality of the vehicle in question. Certain British and German vehicles are known for rapidly shrinking value, but some of the smaller Japanese nameplates lose their worth just as quickly. Among the best? Subaru, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, and?Toyota?rank atop the mass-market brands according to residual-value forecasting company ALG, while Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, Mercedes and Audi fare the best in the luxury arena. These brands can retain more than 60 percent of their value after the first three years of ownership, while some vehicles from those other brands can fall to as little as 35 percent of their new value in the same time.

Drivetrains.?Some buyers may like to shift their own gears, but most buyers don't. Should you deduct value ahead of time if you order a manual transmission? "This comes with a big 'if,'" says Eric Lyman, ALG's Vice President of Residual Value Solutions. "If you're?selling?a performance sports car where enthusiasts and adrenaline junkies make up the majority of buyers of these types of vehicles....sometimes the manual transmission can be more valuable than the automatic."

In general, an automatic transmission will recoup its cost, typically between $1000 and $2000. "Automatic transmissions nearly pay for themselves as the used market value is generally comparable to the new car price of this option," he adds.

Then there's the choice between all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. "Except on rear-wheel-drive?sports cars, all-wheel drive tends to add about $1000 on passenger cars, a bit more onutility?vehicles?and up to a few thousand on?pickup trucks. Depending on the price in the new market this can be a worthwhile upgrade. This is especially true in regions where inclement weather makes all-wheel drive a valuable safety feature."

One surprise? All-wheel drive now shows up as a worthwhile resale item in the southern and coastal states, where wintry weather isn't a concern. "Even in the 'smile states,' all-wheel drive can add sporty driving dynamics to a front-wheel-drive vehicle, while also adding safety in the occasional downpour," Lyman explains.

Paint color.?It can bring you down--or send you sky-high, in terms of resale value. If you don't get white, silver, or black, on a traditional Camry or E-Class, you're risking a slower sale--but the color palette on most mainstream?cars?isn't that gutsy to begin with. Put a Sunset Orange Metallic hue on a?Honda Element?that's already discontinued, or go with metallic purple at the custom-paint shop, and you could be looking at not selling the vehicle at all, for lack of interested buyers.

However, picking the right collectible color on your new sportscar can send the appreciation curve through the roof. Consider the 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo, which offers?a $1,000 matte paint job and a hand-wash kit. If kept in excellent condition, it's likely to recoup all of that cost, since it's a limited edition--but in poor shape, that matte paint could just be a thousand-dollar liability.

ByOwner.com relaunches as free classifieds site New owners ...

BY?INMAN NEWS, WEDNESDAY, JULY 25, 2012.

The new owners of the ?for sale by owner? website ByOwner.com have revamped it by expanding its coverage beyond real estate, eliminating fees for users placing classified ads, and syndicating inbound and outbound postings from other classified portals.

Under the ownership of Boca Raton, Fla.-based Wild Wild West Group LLC, ByOwner.com will generate revenue by selling ads to nonclassified advertisers such as apartment communities and auto dealerships, President Greg Sullivan said. For now, paid advertising is limited to ads served up by Google?s AdSense program.

ByOwner.com, which previously served homeowners selling their properties ?FSBO? ? without the help of a real estate broker ? is not getting out of the real estate business. In addition to offering free classifieds advertising properties for sale or rent, the site also plans to offer a ?flat fee? listing program for sellers who want their homes advertised in a multiple listing service (MLS).

As it branches out of its FSBO niche into consumer classifieds, Sullivan said ByOwner.com will attempt to differentiate itself from the competition by being ?database driven.? Most classified websites that accept ads in multiple categories don?t collect detailed information in database fields, he said.

When users?submit a classified ad?for a single-family home to ByOwner.com, Sullivan said, ?many of the fields we collect are similar to what a broker would collect to enter a property in the MLS,? including the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, year built, square feet, lot size, and school district. Users advertising single-family homes on the site ? including brokers and agents ? can also include descriptions of up to 1,000 characters and eight photos.

All real estate, auto and boat postings will be database-driven, Sullivan said, making it easier for users to search and filter ads. The sites? six main categories are broken into more than 90 different subcategories that allow site users to look for specific characteristics.

?Sullivan said ByOwner.com has syndication partnerships with Owners.com, Rentalads, com, GoSection8.com, PopYachts, Oodle and Indeed, and currently features 115,000 real estate listings, including rentals and properties for sale. There are more than 200,000 classified ads on the site in six main categories: real estate, rentals, cars and trucks, boats, jobs, and ?everything else,? he said.

(AP) ? It was the buy signal that markets were waiting for.

When European Central Bank president Mario Draghi vowed to "do whatever it takes" to keep the continent's monetary union intact, stocks were off to races in the U.S. and Europe.

The Dow Jones industrial average on Thursday jumped 212 points, or 1.7 percent, to 12,888 following big gains in European markets. Benchmark stock indexes in Spain and Italy surged 6 percent and 4 percent in France.

Draghi's comments at an investor conference at the Olympics raised hopes that Europe's central bank might intervene to bring down the cripplingly high borrowing costs for struggling European countries like Spain and Italy.

After insisting for months that it was up to European governments to restore confidence in the currency shared by 17 nations there, Draghi pledged that "the ECB is ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro."

That commitment gave a big boost to global markets. "The No. 1 problem in the world now is Europe's finances," John Fox, director of research at Fenimore Asset Management, said. "When the head of the ECB comes out and says he's willing to do anything, that's code for 'We are going to agree to resolve this issue.' "

In other signs that investors were becoming more confident that Europe's financial crisis would not spin out of control, borrowing costs for Spain and Italy fell sharply, the euro surged a penny to $1.23 against the dollar and the yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.43 percent from 1.40 percent late Wednesday. Investors tend to sell low-risk assets like Treasurys when they're less fearful about global markets and the economy.

As earnings reports this week from Caterpillar and Ford have shown, Europe's troubles can have a big impact on the results of major U.S. corporations.

"Close to 20 percent of the S&P 500 companies' revenues comes from Europe," said Lawrence Creatura, portfolio manager at Federated Investors. "We're in a global, interconnected economy and Europe's troubles are our own today."

The broader the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose for the first time in five days. It was up 22.13 points, or 1.7 percent, to 1,360.02 The gains in the U.S. stock market were broad. All 10 of the industry groups in the S&P 500 index rose, led by telecommunications companies.

In other trading, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 39.01 points, or 1.4 percent, to 2,893.25, despite more disappointing news from technology companies including the online game maker Zynga.

Several U.S. companies were also rising sharply after reporting stronger earnings. Sprint Nextel jumped 68 cents, or 20 percent, to $4.05. The country's third-largest wireless carrier was successful in convincing smartphone subscribers to pay up for "unlimited data" service, and its service revenue zoomed higher, beating analysts' estimates.

In Europe, Draghi's comments came after days of uncertainty in Europe and rising concern over Spain's recession and the country's banks, which are reeling following the implosion of a real estate bubble. As borrowing costs for both Spain and Italy rose in the past week, investors feared that both countries might need to be rescued, like Greece, Portugal and Ireland had been in the last two years.

Borrowing costs for Spain's government plunged following Draghi's comments as investors anticipated that the European Central Bank might step up its purchases of Spanish government bonds.

The yield on Spain's benchmark 10-year bond dropped almost half a percentage point, a huge move, to 6.89 percent. That rate surged as high as 7.54 percent this week as investors dumped the country's bonds and lost confidence in Spain's ability to manage its debts.

Technology companies continued to report disappointing earnings following industry leader Apple's rare earnings disappointment earlier this week.

Zynga, which produces popular social network games "CityVille" and "FarmVille" posted poor quarterly results and cut its outlook, prompting a number of analyst downgrades. Its stock fell $1.90, or 37.5 percent, to $3.17.

Zynga's disastrous results were also a bad omen for Facebook, which got about 12 percent of its 2011 revenue from Zynga. Facebook plunged 10 percent in after-hours trading after the company reported a loss of $157 million for its second quarter. The stock was down $2.63 at $24.19.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? PulteGroup jumped $1.84, or 18 percent, to $11.86 after the homebuilder posted a quarterly profit, beating Wall Street's forecasts thanks to higher house prices and sales.

? United Continental slumped $1.21, or 6 percent, $19.20 after the combined airline's second-quarter net income dropped 37 percent as it continued to wrestle with merger-related issues.

? Whole Foods Market jumped $9.57, or 11 percent, to $94.10 after the natural and organic foods store chain lifted its profit outlook for the year. Its net income jumped 32 percent in the latest quarter as shoppers spent more.

White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African ...

(The Root) -- In an action certainly aimed at energizing his Democratic base, President Obama will announce today that he is signing an executive order specifically intended to improve educational opportunities for African-American students.

The president will announce the order Wednesday evening at the National Urban League Conference in New Orleans. (Watch the live webcast at 7:30 p.m. EDT/6:30 p.m. CDT.)

According to a senior administration official, the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans will be a part of the Department of Education and will work with the president and Cabinet-level agencies "to identify evidence-based best practices to improve African-American students' achievement in school and college." It will also build a network of people, grassroots organizations and communities to share those practices.

In addition, the executive order creates a presidential commission on educational advancement for African-American students, with commission members advising the president and Education Secretary Arne Duncan on broad-stroke strategies meant to enhance educational opportunities for black Americans of all ages.

A separate interagency working group will engage Cabinet agencies and senior officials at the White House in building programs "aimed at advancing outcomes for African Americans in early-childhood education; elementary, secondary and postsecondary education; career and technical education; and adult education," the administration official said.

"From allowing states to opt out of key No Child Left Behind provisions, introducing Race to the Top and releasing the Civil Rights Data Collection Report on educational disparities, President Obama continues to demonstrate the will to improve equity in education and access to college," remarked Ivory A. Toldson, Ph.D., a Howard University professor who is also contributing education editor for The Root.

"Hopefully, during his remarks at the NUL conference, President Obama will specifically address the problems in public education that were delineated in the Civil Rights Data Report [pdf]. Specifically, any federal program to improve educational opportunities for black students should address disproportionate suspensions and 'push out' of black pupils, resource equity and the absence of college-preparatory courses at public schools with the highest percentage of black and Latino students."

Rumor has it that Xoom WiFi owners in the US could soon be on the receiving end of yet another software update, though this time 'round it'd be a virtual jar full of that colorful and buttery smooth Android 4.1. According to a recent changelog received by Droid Life, the Jelly Bean refresh will bring a number of features previously seen on Google's Nexus 7 over to Moto's 10-inch slate -- some of which include an improved UI with the "smoothest version of Android," a new look for Mountain View's search, smarter overall keyboard and widgets that "work like magic." No word on when exactly we'll see the alleged build (JRO038) hit WiFi-only Xooms here in the States, but at least there's some tasteful hope for you.

Four Democrats advocate gun control legislation following Colorado shooting

Four Democrats have come forward in the wake of the mass shooting in Aurora, Colo. to voice support for new legislation aimed to combat gun violence.

Colorado Rep. Diana DeGette, New York Rep. Carolyn McCarthy and New Jersey?Sen. Bob Menendez joined Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey Tuesday to voice support for Lautenberg's bill outlawing the sale of high-capacity gun magazines.

"I hope that this does spark a national conversation about where we go in terms of reasonable gun control measures," Menendez told reporters gathered for a press conference on the issue. "So that no one like Alex Teves, who grew up in New Jersey and found himself in Colorado, will ever again be gunned down by a man who could build an arsenal with a click of a mouse and have it delivered to his door by the cart load--ammunition, high capacity clips, explosives, bomb-making materials--all within the law."

"I think the world is watching," Menendez added.

As Yahoo News reported, the issue of gun control?emerged this weekend in downballot races around the country, but most lawmakers, including those at the White House, have not expressed a desire to push for gun control legislation in the wake of the tragedy.

Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein this weekend cautioned politicians against wading into the issue in an election year."It's a bad time to embrace a new subject," the California lawmaker and gun control advocate said on "Fox News Sunday."

The Democrats speaking out Tuesday urged their colleagues to join them to address gun violence. They also rejected reporters' questions about why they were taking up an issue that appeared to have little chance of passage this session.

?at the Beat the Heat Car Show

It's pretty easy to find a few GM Classics that have been modernized at almost any car show or cruise-in. That's why these 2 caught my eye.?

The first is a '57 Fairlane. From a distance it looks pretty traditional. I'm not 100% sure, but the rims appear to be an old set of beautifully restored Ansen Sprints with their distinctive "D" shaped slots. The bright work was like new and the black paint showed off the tremendous amount of work done on the body.

This body style was only offered for 1 year. The '56's remind me more of the Bel Air. It's easy to tell the '58's were influenced by the Mercury and Edsel line-up.? The forward tilting hoods were standard from 1957 to 1959. Years before and after were all hinged at the cowl.

?

Speaking of hoods, when I finally peered into the engine bay...sat a large displacement modular Ford V-8. I would have enjoyed talking with the owner, but I could not find him. If you are the owner, please drop us a note. We'd enjoy learning more about this Ford.

A few cars away sat this 1980 Ford Pinto Wagon wearing a set of Cragar SS rims. I spoke with the owner, Kevin Evans. This is his story. "I bought the car about a year and a half ago for $5,500. I've been driving it ever since, haven't put a dime into it so far.??

"I take it to a lot of shows. It's so unique that a lot of people don't even know what it is," said Kevin.

I asked Kevin if it still had the 4 cylinder under the hood. "Long gone," he said. "It's got a 302 from a '95 Mustang Cobra."

Weighing in almost 800 lbs lighter than a '95 Mustang, this thing has to be quick. Kevin has another Pinto project underway at home. "This one's a driver," he said. Thanks for sharing your story with us Kevin!

I haven't seen an LS equipped Vegas yet. Then again I haven't stopped looking.

Health News - MS drug disappoints on disability

This week the Journal of the American Medical Association published a study with unfortuate news for the millions of people who suffer from multiple sclerosis. In the large study, a therapy known as interferon beta failed to stave off the progression of the incurable disease. Albert Lo, associate professor of neurology and epidemiology, comments on what the study means for patients, why it was well-designed, and how a new effort to support research on the disease in Rhode Island could help.

The results of this study with nearly 2,700 participants showed that treatment with interferon beta, which is a major class of disease-modifying therapy for multiple sclerosis, did not prevent progression of disability, which is very disappointing from a therapeutic perspective. Currently, there is no cure for MS, and as a lifelong disorder of the nervous system, MS is characterized by episodic relapses of neurological injury such as weakness or blindness. While in most cases, there is a varying degree of recovery after relapses, over time, disability accumulates. The accumulation of deficits and the loss of physical and mental function is a major concern for people with MS and their clinicians.

Currently, there is no medication on the market that is directed explicitly for neuroprotection and the prevention of disability. Many had hoped that the interferons, along with the other disease-modifying agents (which were developed to reduce relapse rates) would also have a significant effect on protecting patients from MS disability.

Although the results from this study were not as we would have hoped, they reflect a marked improvement over prior studies which used known methodologic flaws. The new results from the Tremlett group point to the importance of the research methodology used (prospectively collected longitudinal study data) and a well-controlled design to generate the results ? approaches that we are using in our own research at Brown University.

A number of the early studies examining the effect of interferons on disability primarily used patient sample groups of convenience for post-marketing studies. They indicated that interferons were in fact preventing disability. However, using samples of convenience inherently includes a number of biases and problems. Dr. Tremlett?s results were generated from a more systematic longitudinal study in which biases and shortcomings can be better addressed. Therefore, making conclusions and clinical decisions from the results is more reliable. These data both will help in making clinical decisions on treating MS patients during the later course of their disease, when there are virtually no relapses, and will help to point more urgently toward the clinical need of an agent to prevent disability.

At Brown, we have initiated a new longitudinal study for MS called the Rhode Island MS Study (RIMSS). I along with Professor Stephen Buka, chair of the Department of Epidemiology, and our team have started a statewide study to better understand how MS affects patient lives and functional abilities and, like the Tremlett investigation, what treatments might improve such outcomes. The first phase of this study has been funded through a grant from the National MS Society and an anonymous gift to Brown University.
