Do you agree with the Supreme Court's ruling to uphold the health care law?
Tennessee legislators and party officials across the political spectrum unleashed polarized, predictable reactions after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled favorably on President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.
Now the president's friends and enemies in the Tennessee Valley and elsewhere will look ahead to the November election and its ramifications for Obama's central legislative achievement.
In solidly Republican Southeast Tennessee and North Georgia, most of the news releases flowing into local reporters' inboxes roared with anger over the individual mandate requiring nearly all Americans to buy health insurance or pay a penalty.
U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., who once voted to confirm Chief Justice John Roberts, criticized Roberts' majority opinion
"Congress should repeal the law and then proceed step by step to reduce the cost of health care so more Americans can afford to buy insurance," Alexander said in a statement.
The remaining five senators in Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia -- all Republicans -- agreed.
Democrats exulted in the 5-4 outcome, noting similarities between Obama's law and Mitt Romney's similar health care legislation as governor in Massachusetts.
"Most American lawyers aren't surprised by today's Supreme Court decision, nor am I," U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper, a Nashville Democrat, said in a statement. "It turns out that Obamacare, Romneycare and Robertscare are the same thing -- and constitutional."
U.S. Rep. Tom Graves, a Republican who represents several North Georgia counties, described Thursday as "a dark day in our history." U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais, a Republican physician from South Pittsburg, Tenn., called it "a sad day for health care."
Both men touted their largely symbolic 2011 House votes to repeal the bill, and 3rd District U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann vowed to "fight to repeal Obamacare and replace it with free market health care reforms which put patients first."
One of Fleischmann's Democratic challengers for the 3rd District, Chattanooga businessman Bill Taylor, said the Supreme Court's affirmation of the law does exactly that.
"The [Affordable Care Act] was created to stop the unfair advantage that insurance companies have gained over people's ability to afford health care," Taylor said. "This decision will help us move forward in creating a system of affordable, quality health care that is available to everyone."
U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., issued a one-sentence statement advocating repeal and replacement "with common sense reforms that our nation and its citizens can afford."
Republican officials said there was only one way to make that happen.
"Getting rid of Obama-Care is now in the hands of the American people and we can accomplish that by electing Mitt Romney president in November," Tennessee GOP Chairman Chris Devaney said in a prepared statement.
Tennessee Young Democrats President Sean Braisted shrugged off the politics, saying the health care overhaul was a positive reaction to America's most recent recession, which prohibited many young people from getting jobs and employer-sponsored health insurance.
"The 2010 Affordable Care Act allows for hundreds of thousands of young Americans to stay on their parents' health insurance throughout college and as they start on their own," Braisted said. "This provision alone has saved thousands of lives of people who previously could not have afforded care for chronic illnesses or emergencies."

Wedding photographer Kristina Hill says she?s contemplating legal action for copyright infringement against a Virginia-based group that has ripped off one of her images of a same-sex couple, and used it to create a political attack ad.
The group, called Public Advocate of the United States, used an engagement photo of Hill?s showing her clients kissing. The group used the image in a political ad attacking Colorado State Senator Jean White, who has voted in favor of allowing civil unions in Colorado.
Public Advocate, which is designated a ?hate group? by the Southern Poverty Law Center.? cropped Hill?s image, stripped away the background of the New York skyline, and replaced it with a background of a Colorado landscape in winter. The group also superimposed text that read: ?State Senator Jean White?s idea of ?family values???
?Kristina Hill
The ad was created for a conservative anti-gay opponent vying for White?s senate seat. White was defeated in that race.
One of the men in Hill?s photograph, Brian Edwards, was notified by a friend about the ad. Edwards minced no words about it on his blog called The Gay Wedding Experience: ?How do I feel? I?m in shock and I?m angry and I?m hurt and I?m flabbergasted and I?m livid.?
According to The Denver Post, Edwards and his partner have hired a lawyer.
Hill also wrote about the theft on her blog. ?To see an image, taken with that intent being used in the way it was used is heart-breaking for me,? she said. (Hill was a PDN Top Knots contest winner in 2010.)
In The Denver Post story about the ad, Public Advocate defended its unauthorized use of the image on the grounds that others ?make fair use of our materials.? (Public Advocate?s web site says it is ?fighting Liberals Tyrants Elitists Homosexuals Barack Obama pornography gay marriage same-sex marriage high taxes over-regulation.?)
In an interview with PDN, Hill said of Public Advocate?s use of her image, ?It?s obviously copyright infringement, and I plan to pursue it.?
She?s just not certain she has the resources?or the stomach?for a protracted court fight. ?There?s not going to be monetary gain in my lawsuit. I don?t care. I would be looking for justice. But it could drag on for years, and rack up a lot legal fees for me, and I don?t have a ton of money.?
She adds, ?They?re a powerful organization that did this. I?m one tiny photographer. It?s scary. It could be a lot of tearing me apart. It could get ugly.?

Since I read Anne-Marie Slaughter?s piece Why Women Still Can?t Have it All last week I?ve been pondering the idea of what it means to truly ?have it all.?
I?m not new at this mommy gig. With a nine-year-old, an almost-five-year old, and a three-year-old, I?m in the trenches, so to speak, but I have a few years of parenting under my belt.
This adds up, roughly, to: 700 time outs, 4,000 spilled sippy cups, 20 car seat installations, and 1,456,792 poopy diapers.
Nevertheless, I know better than to say that I know what I?m doing.
We?ve been through a lot as a family. At least once a week I marvel at the fact that I?ve been able so far to keep the wheels on this bus moving forward and cling to my sanity at the same time. As a mom, I?ve worked full time and part time outside the home. For two years I was a stay-at-home mom with no job, and if you?d asked me back then I?d have told you it was going to stay that way. Then suddenly I found myself working again, very part-time teaching one night a week. And now I?m home full time but also working. Full time? Part time? I haven?t done the math.
All I know is this: in each of these arrangements I?ve failed to achieve it ?all.? If it exists, it has eluded me these past nine years. Here?s the thing, though. I?ve never gone out seeking ?it all.? It?s a myth, like the American Dream or the perfect bra or a brand of nonfat ranch dressing that still tastes good.
There is no such thing as ?it all.?
In Slaughter?s article she describes leaving her position at the State Department in search of that elusive work-family balance, her ?desire to be with my family and my conclusion that juggling high-level government work with the needs of two teenage boys was not possible.?
I?ve never been a high-level government official. I?ve never even been a low-level government official. Come to think of it, I?ve never been any kind of official (unless you count that time I got to hold the flag at the Girl Scouts regional meeting in 5th grade) but do have an understanding about what it means to work hard and do the best by your family at the same time. I don?t think this is an issue that we can isolate to the ranks of the power elite. I know women who work in insurance offices and hospitals and in elementary school libraries who struggle with these same issues.
Across the country there are clerks at Dollar Generals and cashiers at Krogers who fight the rough waters of work and home harmony and who go under every day.
We?re not doing women any favors by promoting this myth that it?s possible to ?have it all.? Can someone please tell me what that even means? My suspicion is that the headline of the article (which was a fascinating and well-written and thought-provoking read) was intended to bait women into another tussle in the Mommy Wars. The cover photo on the issue of The Atlantic in which the article appears depicts a toddler in a briefcase like a cast-off file folder, a minor inconvenience, or the working woman?s latest must-have accessory.
I?ve yet to meet a working mom who regards her child in that way.
I?d be happy if we could stop promoting myths like ?having it all? as a mom because it ends up making us all feel like failures if we don?t measure up. For me, though, for now, a forward-moving bus driven by a mother who?s clinging to her sanity is the best I can do.
I?m not in pursuit of ?having it all,? and maybe that?s why I?m happy with what I have.

Flight training is a very costly. You will need to pay for the rental of the airplane, instructor, and other materials. There are lots of little and not so little costs. The cold reality is that not everyone with a dream of flight will be able to afford it. The purpose of this article is to present some ideas on ways to pay for flight training.
Trade something for training
If you have a skill that is beneficial to a flight school like being web designer or accountant many flight schools would like somebody to maintain their web page or help them maintain the books and pay the taxes. It might be as simple as washing the airplanes and mowing the grass. Don?t be afraid to ask your local flight school or FBO to determine what they any interest.
Scholarships
There are scholarships available for flight training albeit some may not be for very much every little bit helps. Scholarships listed below were found on the FAA website
The Experimental Aircraft Association and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association also have several Aviation scholarships available.
Buy an aircraft and lease it back
You might find it interesting, that most aircraft available at the flight school are not aren't actually owned by the flight school that rents and maintains them. They are owned by someone else and the flight school pays them for the use of the aircraft. Talk to an accountant, to determine if after the flight school takes out the operating costs if there is an opportunity for a small profit that you could use to fund your flight training.
Start an Aircraft Side Business
You might consider starting an aircraft washing business at the airport. The business could also be an interior detailing service. Before your start make sure you have talked to several owners to understand how to properly clean an aircraft. The exterior cleaning should include a complete exterior wash, degrease, bug removal, clean and polish of the windows. The interior cleaning would include interior vacuuming and all interior windows cleaned.
You could expect to make the following:
? $50 for a 4 place airplane
? $350 for a small jet
This is by far not the most complete list, for the entrepreneurial pilot the ways to pay for flight time is endless. Some are more profitable than others, but every little bit helps.

The Catching Fire casting carousel has landed on Jena Malone.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the former Sucker Punch actress is a frontrunner for the key role of Johanna Mason, a District 7 Tribute who doesn't get along too well with Katniss in Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games follow-up.
While Lionsgate has not yet commented on any casting rumors, and while names continue to be bantered about for both Johanna and Finnick Odair, no new actors or actresses have actually signed on yet.
It's unclear why. Kristen Bell is clearly perfect for Johanna and has made no secret of her passion for The Hunger Games.

This is an excerpt from Hybrid Reality, a new e-book by Ayesha and Parag Khanna.
The word ?technology? combines the Greek tekhne and logos, symbolizing that technology, like language, is as intrinsic to the human condition as speech. Language, though, does not stand alone; it is part of a larger cultural system. Hence the German word Technik, which denotes not only technologies themselves, but also the skills and processes surrounding them. A century ago, leading Western philosophers appreciated the promise and peril of mass industrialization technologies. Oswald Spengler?s Der Mensch und die Technik: Beitrag zu einer Philosophie des Lebens (1931) proposed to integrate technology into a philosophy of life, arguing that Technik is a process that unites our economic, political, educational and cultural systems. The American sociologist Lewis Mumford, in his Technics and Civilization (1934), emphasized that technology must be more than just objects seen as ends in themselves (monotechnics); it must be a collection of ideas and methods that improve society (polytechnics). Technik unites the scientific and mechanical dimensions of technology (determinism) with a necessary concern for its effect on humans and society (constructivism). Technik, then, is the technological quotient of civilization.
Whereas geotechnology is about power, Technik is about adaptability. We live and die by our Technik, the capacity to harness emerging technologies to improve our circumstances. How does our culture deal with the distribution of technology? Can we devise strategies to maximize the upside of technology while minimizing the downside? Instead of West vs. East and democracies vs. dictatorships, actors ranging from cities to diasporas to corporations to cloud communities will compete and collaborate to attain Technik.
Science-fiction author William Gibson?s famous quip that the future is already here but unevenly distributed is the quintessential encapsulation of the fact that we differ in our stages of Technik. In a world of such diverse political forms??? ?democracies, monarchies, authoritarian states?? ?the ?war of ideas? will never be won. Instead, we will increasingly differentiate societies on the basis not of their regime type or income, but of their capacity to harness technology. Societies that continuously upgrade their Technik will thrive.
When standards of living are so perpetually threatened by technological shifts, shouldn?t Technik be a factor in evaluating societal stability? The contrast between the U.N.?s Human Development Index (HDI) and the reigning obsession with per capita GDP illustrates just how important it is to develop a more neutral, long-term-focused metric for progress. Many wealthy societies have low human-development scores (e.g., Arab petro-states), while China?s score is rising quickly even as its per capita income remains modest. We should layer on technology-focused criteria as well, such as the World Economic Forum?s Network Readiness Index (NRI), which assesses the quality of individual access, government regulation and business investment along more than 50 indicators. Not surprisingly, Sweden, Singapore and Finland are at the top, but interestingly, technocratic China scores higher than democratic India, and India higher than Italy. Good Technik requires a combination of the attributes that deliver high human development, economic growth, political inclusiveness and technology preparedness.
Which societies display the best Technik today? Given the high proportion of Asian leadership with science, engineering and math backgrounds, and their countries? export-led growth creating sizable surpluses, it is no surprise that first Japan, and then Korea and China, have invested so heavily in infrastructure to catch up with?? and potentially surpass????the West.
Japan?s technology obsession and idiosyncratic social traits make it a fascinating case study of the early Hybrid Age. Japan already has 38 of the top 50 cities ranked by speed of Internet connection. Its resilience as a society is demonstrated by its ability to rebound from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, keeping supply chains intact and rebuilding coastal communities. More broadly, Japanese society has embraced robots to such an extent that it seems to prefer a man-machine hybrid civilization to an ethnically mixed one. Robots are increasingly employed in building homes, caring for the elderly and even entertaining the masses???witness Hatsune Miku?s sold-out holographic concerts.
But there are costs to such a rapid embrace of robots: Males unable to meet traditional expectations become alienated and retreat into Internet addiction and virtual companionship, accelerating a decline in the birthrate. If any country becomes the first to feature human and robot citizens fruitfully co-creating a new hybrid culture, it is likely to be Japan?? but it needs to make sure there are enough humans there to enjoy it.
Singapore, once a colonial swamp governed from India, is today a seamlessly efficient cosmopolitan world capital of finance and, increasingly, innovation. Indeed, the lack of natural resources has made it an innovator in the most (un)expected areas, from fuel refining to water desalination. Now its Biopolis and Fusionopolis complexes aim to capture the edge in life sciences and immersive media. Peter Schwartz likes to call Singapore ?the best-run company in the world,? and indeed it is the leading role model in city-state Technik for entities from Abu Dhabi to Moscow to Kuala Lumpur. It must, however, evolve its political and educational systems to ensure that its own people are innovating in addition to all the talent it imports.
Finland, the so-called ?open-source nation,? is a leading Western example of Technik. Finland?s sophisticated population has embraced the digital life and pioneered mobile technology (Nokia) and an open-source operating system (Linux). In Helsinki, mobile phones are as much for banking and street navigation as for communication. In no other country does one so strongly feel that a mobile phone is part of one?s identity. It cannot be the weather that has earned the country the second position worldwide in the United Nations World Happiness Report.
Israel presents another example of rising Technik. Not only has it made major investments in biotechnology and other strategic sectors, but for several years its chief scientist gave out nonrecourse loans to more than 4,000 startups. Rwanda, Mongolia and many other nations are seeking to copy Israel?s blueprint as the ?startup nation.? Technology will long outlast the United States as Israel?s key ally.
Even a country still as overwhelmingly poor as India can elevate its Technik. Its mobile-phone penetration rate is skyrocketing, a biometric national identity card scheme is gradually delivering rights and services to hundreds of millions of previously disenfranchised citizens, digital kiosks in dusty villages are spreading access to information and education, and a sophisticated Right to Information Act requires publishing all laws on the Internet. Parts of India such as its tech hub, Bangalore, represent the leap from an agricultural to a service economy in a single generation.
The United States is home to some of the key pioneers of Technik, whose innovations help society adapt to the future?? yet it struggles to keep first-mover advantage over their innovations. Semiautonomous government agencies such as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) have invented technologies?? from the World Wide Web to robotic exoskeletons????that eventually gained widespread application. However, the U.S. share of global R&D, like global GDP, has fallen to around 20 percent, and since not enough of those funds are devoted to commercialization initiatives, the United States sometimes has to buy things it invented a decade ago from competitors abroad. Fortunately for America, it is still home to most of the world?s ?silicon superpowers?: IBM, Google, Cisco, Apple, Microsoft and more. Those companies? hardware and software platforms are the foundation for almost endless innovation by diverse users worldwide, a contribution no Europeans or Asians can match. Technik is big business: Led by American ingenuity, we are entering the age of the $1 trillion corporation?? ?and the first to cross the mark probably won?t be one of the usual suspects but a manufacturer of 3-D printers that allow anyone to turn virtual designs into physical objects.
IBM is perhaps the leading example of how firms themselves should perpetually seek to upgrade their Technik. Having spun off its hardware production divisions over the past decade, IBM now invests in artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, clean energy and devices for high-tech health care. As a globally integrated enterprise with almost 500,000 employees worldwide (including 100,000 in India alone), it is also a de facto leader in spreading Technik to other societies. For its part, Apple exhibits the clever trait of creativity with control, bringing large swaths of humanity into its exclusive orbit of products and interfaces. Its $100 billion in cash outstrips the GDP of more than 100 individual countries. Apple products are undeniably one of America?s most coveted exports.
Even companies in traditional sectors can demonstrate enormous staying power and Technik by diversifying businesses, exploring new markets and hedging risk. For example, super-major oil companies such as BP and Chevron are among the leading investors in clean energy, and Coca-Cola and McDonald?s own a growing share of the health food sector. Large players constantly ?spin in? dynamic newcomers, incorporating their innovations and modifying their business models to stay on top.
The struggle to attain Technik could become the new global class struggle: those whose wages and quality of life benefit from technology versus those perpetually lagging behind prevailing standards. In the new global class struggle, there would be no clear geographic boundaries such as North and South, since the disparities of Technik exist?? ?and could widen????both across and within nations and cities. Technik is therefore a quality we must all strive for: whether as individuals, companies, communities, cities or countries.

Just as planned, Cricket Communications has become the first prepaid carrier in the U.S. to offer the Apple iPhone.
Cricket, a subsidiary of Leap Wireless, began selling the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S to prepaid customers in its stores and through select dealers Friday morning with its $55 per month, unlimited talk, text, and data plan. Cricket customers were eager to get their hands on the prepaid iPhone, the company said.
"So far, customer activity has been brisk with customers waiting at the door as the stores opened," a Cricket spokesman told PCMag in an email.
Cricket late last month announced it would be offering the iPhone to customers without a contract. On Cricket's plan, the 16GB iPhone 4S is available for $499.99 and the 8GB iPhone 4 is available for $399.99. Both come in black or white.
"Launching iPhone is a major milestone for us and we are proud to offer iPhone customers attractive nationwide coverage, a robust 3G data network and a value-packed, no-contract plan," Doug Hutcheson, president and CEO of Leap, said in a statement last month.
Cricket is first prepaid carrier to nab the iPhone but it isn't the only one. Sprint's Virgin Mobile USA division will also begin offering the iPhone on a pay-as-you-go basis, starting on June 29.
T-Mobile is currently the only one of the four major U.S. carriers that does not yet have the iPhone, due to network incompatibilities. Sprint jumped on board with the release of the iPhone 4S, joining Verizon and AT&T as Apple partners.
In April, a number of regional carriers landed the coveted Apple smartphone, including nTelos, Cellcom, and GCI.

American Realty Capital Properties Inc. has added 21 single-tenant properties to its rapidly growing portfolio of net-leased assets. The company shelled out $26.2 million for the freestanding buildings, which account for an aggregate 300,000 square feet of office and retail space across 10 states.
Talk about creditworthy tenants; this group has it in spades. Four of the properties are office destinations occupied by the federal government. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service makes its home in a building in Gloucester, Va., while the U.S. Forest Service maintains digs in a structure in Warren, Pa. Additionally, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers leases a property in Mobile, Ala., and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration occupies a building in Plattsburgh, N.Y. The remaining properties in ARCP?s newly acquired group of assets include a single Tractor Supply store in Rio Grande, Texas, and 16 Dollar General stores bought from a partnership involving Grisham Land & Cattle L.L.C.
ARCP relied on proceeds from its recent underwritten public offering to finance the purchases. The company will utilize more funds from the offering to snap up a 22nd asset.
On the road to qualifying as a REIT, ARCP focuses on the ownership and acquisition of well-tenanted net-leased properties, and its new assets fit the bill. However, securing such properties is no simple accomplishment, as the competition for such assets is steep, making large group purchases increasingly challenging. ?We expect 2012 to be a year in which demand for single-tenant investment will remain high,? commercial real estate services firm Cassidy Turley notes in a report. ?The only question is whether a lack of available properties hampers sale activity.?
Obtaining multiple single-tenant net-leased assets is difficult but not impossible, as evidenced by a handful of recent transactions. Earlier this month a group of nine Walgreens stores on the East Coast totaling 117,600 square feet traded for $68.7 million. Additionally, in May, ARCP became the owner of six built-to-suit FedEx Freight distribution facilities, courtesy of a $12.2 million transaction. And even single-property purchases can be hard to come by, not to mention pricey. In May, a 16,000-square-foot Walgreens drugstore in Las Vegas sold for $27.8 million. With a price tag of $1,736 per square foot, the retail property became the most valuable single-tenant drugstore ever to trade in the U.S.

NEW YORK?? George Washington's personal copy of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights sold for $9.8 million at auction on Friday, setting a record for an American book or historic document.
Several bidders at Christie's New York salesroom and others on the telephone competed for the first U.S. president's signed, gold-embossed volume dating to 1789, which had a pre-sale estimated of up to $3 million.
The Mount Vernon Ladies Association, which maintains the historic Mount Vernon estate in Virginia that was Washington's home and is now open to the public, was the successful bidder.
The bound volume was Washington's personal copy of the Acts of Congress.

They include the Constitution, whose preamble promises to "secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity," and the Bill of Rights, the first 10 amendments to the Constitution, which establish such fundamental liberties as the right to free speech, press, assembly and religion.
Story: Sold! One Declaration of Independence copyChristie's described the book as being in near-pristine condition after 223 years. It was specially printed for Washington in 1789, his first year in office as president.
The margins include Washington's handwritten brackets and notations highlighting key passages concerning the president's responsibilities.
The Acts of Congress volume was sold from Washington's library at Mount Vernon in 1876 and eventually bought at auction by collector Richard Dietrich in the 1960s. It was being sold by the family's estate.

Dinosaur skeleton may have been stolen from Mongolia
Intrigue continues to surround the?Tyrannosaurus bataar skeleton that was sold for a whopping $1,052,000 at auction back in May. Even before the auction took place, the government of Mongolia?stepped forward to claim that the bones were stolen from the country. But it's only now that a judge signed a warrant, giving feds the power to seize the prehistoric animal's remains.
The 75% complete, 8-foot tall, 24-foot long skeleton belonged to a species called?T. bataar ? the North American?T. rex's Asian relative. Heritage Auctions sold it to an anonymous buyer, but chances are the buyer will never get their hands on the skeleton.?It's still unclear how Heritage Auctions ended up with what's possibly a stolen national treasure. When asked for a comment on the issue, auction house president Gregory Rohan said one wouldn't sell a stolen?Tyrannosaurus skeleton at a public auction.
As for Mongola's government, all it wants is to get the skeleton back.?"We want this dinosaur to go back to Mongolia where it belongs," said Bolorsetseg Minjin, director of the?Institute for the Study of Mongolian Dinosaurs. Homeland Security is expected to seize the skeleton tomorrow, after which it will be kept at an undisclosed location while the court decides its rightful owner.

CHICAGO (AP) ? College football has always relied on polls and bowls to crown a national championship. It is an inexact science that has left many fans frustrated and wondering why they can't settle it on the field ? like every other sport ? with a playoff.
Finally, the people in charge agree with the people in the stands.
A major college football playoff, albeit a small one, is closer than ever to becoming a reality.
The BCS commissioners have backed a plan for a four-team playoff with the sites for the national semifinals rotating among the major bowl games and a selection committee picking the participants. The plan will be presented to university presidents next week for approval.
Once the presidents sign off ? and that seems likely ? major college football's champion will be decided by a playoff for the first time, starting in 2014.
The Bowl Championship Series is on its death bed. Even the name is likely to go away.
"We are excited to be on the threshold of creating a new postseason structure for college football that builds on the great popularity of our sport," Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said Wednesday.
All 11 commissioners stood shoulder-to-shoulder behind Swarbrick, who read the BCS statement from a podium set up in a hotel conference room.
The commissioners have been working on reshaping college football's postseason since January. The meeting Wednesday was the sixth formal get-together of the year. They met for four hours and emerged with a commitment to stand behind a plan.
"I think we're very unified," said Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany, who for years had been a staunch opponent of even the smallest playoff.
For decades, major college football didn't even try to organize a championship game. The top teams played in marquee bowl games and if it happened to work out that No.1 and No. 2 squared off on New Year's Day, well, all the better. When all the games were done, the voters in the AP poll would crown a champion and so would the coaches who vote in their poll. Sometimes there would be two No. 1s.
In the 1990s, the commissioners of the major conferences came up with the idea to create a national title game, matching No. 1 vs. No. 2 every year. Eventually, that spawned the Bowl Championship Series, which was implemented in 1998. Instead of solving the problem of crowning a champion, the BCS only seemed to exasperate fans even more. Too often, using polls and computer ratings to narrow the field to two teams was all but impossible.
Like last year, when Alabama lost to LSU in the regular season, but ended up getting a second crack at the Tigers in the BCS title game ? despite having the same record as Big 12 champion Oklahoma State. The Crimson Tide validated their appearance by trouncing LSU and winning the BCS title, but many outside of SEC country were left unsatisfied.
Under the commissioners' proposal, Alabama and Oklahoma State likely would have played in one semifinal while LSU played Pac-12 champion Oregon in the other.
No doubt many will wonder, "Why only four?"
"I'm sure it won't satisfy everyone," Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said. "Until you have an eight-team or 16-team seeded playoff, there will be folks out there that aren't completely satisfied. We get that. But we're trying to balance other important parties, like the value of the regular season, the bowls, the academic calendar."
The commissioners refrained from providing many specifics of the plan in their announcement.
Scott did say the two semifinals would be worked into the existing major bowls and the site of the national championship game will be bid out to any city that wants it, the way the NFL does with the Super Bowl.
People with firsthand knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press that the semifinals of the proposed plan would rotate among the major bowls and not be tied to traditional conference relationships.
They also said that under the plan a selection committee would choose the schools that play for the national title.
The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the commissioners did not want to reveal many details before talking to their bosses.
"I am delighted," said SEC Commissioner Mike Slive, whose push for a four-team playoff in 2008 was shot down. "I am pleased with the progress we have made. There are some differences, but we will work them out. We're trying to do what is in the best interest of the game."
It will certainly be in the best financial interest.
The BCS television contract with ESPN ? along with the Rose Bowl's separate contract with ABC ? pays the participating schools $155 million per year. BCS officials won't put an exact number on it, but they aren't shy about saying that a playoff would be worth much more. Probably more than double.
How that money will be split up among the conferences is still to be determined, and will likely be a point of contention with high-profile and high revenue generating leagues such as the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Atlantic Coast Conference getting more than the likes of the Mountain West and Conference USA. The rebuilt Big East could be looking at being bumped to second-tier status.
But before they split up the pot, there were other details that needed to be sorted out.
There was some debate about whether to have semifinal sites rotate between the current BCS bowls ? the Orange, Sugar, Rose and Fiesta ? or link the sites of the games to traditional conference affiliations. By linking sites to leagues Southeastern Conference teams could host games at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans and Pac-12 and Big Ten teams could host games at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
But the logistical issues that come with not having the sites for the semifinals set in advance were too big a problem. Now it will be possible for Ohio State and Oregon to play a semifinal in Miami, the site of the Orange Bowl.
How the teams will be selected also has been hotly debated; the current Bowl Championship Series uses a combination of polls and computer rankings.
There are still major details to be worked out, such as who exactly makes up the selection committee, but college football will take a page from college basketball, which uses a committee of athletic directors and commissioners to pick the teams for its championship tournament.
