Delta will pay dividend, buy back shares

(AP) ? Delta Air Lines will start paying a quarterly dividend and buy back some of its shares ? investor-friendly moves common in other industries but rare for airlines.

For years, the industry repelled long-term investors with high debt, losses, labor strife, bankruptcies, and roller-coaster stock prices. Now, airline bosses are eager to show that those days are over and their companies are good investments.

"Airlines used to be boom and bust companies, extremely risky. More airlines went out of business than earned a profit," said S&P Capital IQ analyst Jim Corridore. "I think what Delta did today is they made a huge statement that, at least for them, it's a different story."

Delta said Wednesday that the dividend and stock buyback will return $1 billion to shareholders. The airline has posted a profit for three straight years, while trimming its debt by $5 billion.

CEO Richard Anderson said Delta's financial plan "furthers our commitment to becoming the airline of choice for our employees, customers and shareholders."

Other airline CEOs have also spoken of measuring their company's success by its return to shareholders.

"We are running United like a real business, for long-term success," said Jeff Smisek, CEO of United Continental Holdings Inc., on an April 25 investor conference call. But United has been losing money, and has had to give raises to employees and spend money fixing technology issues as it works through its 2010 merger with Continental. United said in a statement Wednesday that it is working to achieve its goals for financial returns "and will look to opportunities in the future" for other ways to spend its money.

US Airways Group Inc. is profitable, but has been focused on its own proposed merger with American.

Of the large U.S. airlines, only Southwest Airlines Co. pays a dividend ? one penny per share per quarter. Southwest's stability and consistent profits have helped it attract institutional investors such as pensions, which have avoided other airlines because of their volatility.

J.P.Morgan analyst Jamie Baker wrote in a note to clients that Delta's dividend and share repurchase should win over more institutional investors, making its shareholder base more like Southwest's. The moves should also boost Delta's shares, Baker said.

He thinks United will follow Delta in a year or two, and the merged American sometime after that.

"We expect other managements will follow, or will have to answer to their owners as to why not," he wrote.

Delta will pay a quarterly dividend of 6 cents per share on Sept. 10 to people who own the stock on Aug. 9. The yield, a measure of how much a company pays out in dividends relative to its stock price, would be 1.3 percent, based on Wednesday's closing price.

The airline also plans to buy back $500 million of its stock by mid-2016. Buybacks have the effect of returning cash to shareholders because their shares then represent a bigger slice of the company and its profits.

Several companies have announced new or expanded share repurchases this year. Companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 index authorized $208 billion in buybacks in the first quarter, and in April, Apple's board authorized a $50 billion buyback, the largest ever.

Delta last paid a dividend in 2003. Airlines then were reeling from a slow economy, travel worries because of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and high costs left over from better times.

Delta's trip through bankruptcy court from 2005 to 2007 wiped out its shareholders. United, US Airways, and Northwest also went through bankruptcies in the 2000s. American Airlines is in bankruptcy protection now, and plans to emerge as part of its merger with US Airways.

Delta bought Northwest in an all-stock deal in 2008. It earned about $2.4 billion from 2010 to 2012 and cut its adjusted debt to $11.7 billion from $17 billion at the end of 2009. Delta said it's on track to owe $10 billion by the end of this year.

The carrier said its five-year plan calls for it to "achieve and maintain" adjusted debt of $7 billion. Delta ended 2012 with $3.4 billion in cash, which it uses to reduce the amount of adjusted debt it reports.

Berkshire Hathaway chief Warren Buffett was asked on Saturday whether airlines have become a good investment because of the consolidation in the industry. Buffett has sworn off airline investments ever since Berkshire Hathaway held preferred stock in U.S. Air in the 1990s. Berkshire eventually made money off the shares but not as much as Buffett expected.

Buffett said he continues to think airlines are a terrible business and a terrible investment with an insatiable appetite for capital.

"If it ever gets down to one airline and no regulations, it will be a great business," he said.

Delta Air Lines Inc. is based in Atlanta. Its shares were up 58 cents, or 3.2 percent, to close at $18.66 after rising as high as $18.84 earlier. The last time Delta stock was that high was February 2008.

Biosensor that detects antibiotic resistance brings us one step closer to fighting superbugs

May 8, 2013 ? On May 8th JoVE will publish research that demonstrates how a biosensor can detect antibiotic resistance in bacteria. This new technology is a preliminary step in identifying and fighting superbugs, a major public health concern that has led to more deaths than AIDS in the United States in recent years.

The technology is the result of collaboration between Dr. Vitaly Vodyanoy at Auburn University and the Keesler Air Force Base with funding from the United States Air Force.

Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch first characterized antibiosis, the ability for a chemical to kill bacterial cells, in 1877. Since then, the medical and biochemical communities have made great advances in the treatment of bacterial infections. These advances have helped reduce childhood mortality and have contributed to the population growth of the 20th Century. However, natural selection has allowed antibiotic resistant bacteria to flourish and propagate, and continued exposure has lead to the evolution of "superbugs" that are resistant to multiple types of antibiotics.

"Antibiotic resistant bacteria is a serious problem," Dr. Vodyanoy says. "It is very important [when treating a patient] to distinguish between normal and resistant bacteria; if you have a case of resistance you have to take special measures to cure it."

Dr. Vodyanoy's technology takes advantage of bacteriophages, simple viruses that can target and kill bacteria. A bacteriophage, when combined with specific antibodies, can be used to produce a physical color change in a sample that indicates antibiotic resistance. This technology will be invaluable to clinicians trying to treat patients and disinfect hospital facilities.

Specifically, this technique targets antibiotic resistant Staphylococcus, one of the first pathogens characterized as a superbug. Staphylococcus, commonly referred to as staph, often is a bothersome skin condition cured with common antibiotics. However, variations of the staph bacteria can turn deadly when infecting immune-compromised patients or internal organs like lungs and the respiratory tract. The disease is of particular concern to hospitals, prisons, and branches of the military, where individuals are at risk for infection from unhygienic close quarters.

"In our method, we can determine bacterial antibiotic resistance in 10-12 minutes, while other methods take hours," Dr. Vodyanoy explains. Alternative methods used to detect antibiotic resistance need time-intensive purification steps before multi-hour sequencing protocols. "We envision a future where clinicians do tests with real blood or saliva samples. The virus is completely benign to humans, and we hope to use it to make antimicrobial surfaces and glassware that kill the bacteria."

South Korean Newspaper May Have Just Printed the Worst Photoshop Ever

President Obama met with South Korea's President Park Geun-hye at the White House this past Tuesday, and as major world leaders are wont to do in each others' presence, handshakes abounded. This three-handed, two-roomed, Photoshop monstrosity, however, was not one of them.

What makes this not just bad but inexplicable is that there were plenty of photos taken in which the pair of presidents actually shake hands (see below). Yet Yonhap, South Korea's largest news provider, decided to take this opportunity to go for something, oh, a little more whimsical.

And while you may assume that there's no way they could possibly expect anyone to believe that Geun-hye is shaking Obama's third, disembodied floating hand, the caption underneath the photo begs to differ:

So what do we take away here? Are the clearly disparate backdrops symbolic of a cultural divide? Is that divisive third hand the manifestation of Kim Jong-Un? Did a toddler get loose in Yonhap's office right before press time and wreak havoc? All questions to which we may never have answers. But?then again?true art is supposed to challenge you.

Right now, it can be difficult to manage weight as a Type I - if you exercise, you must reduce your insulin dosage in advance. Otherwise, your blood sugar drops and you wind up eating to make up the calories.

While a normal person (or even a Type 2) can say "I'm gonna go for a run/long walk now because I feel like it", a Type 1's thought process, if they actually want to get benefit is, "I'm definitely going to go for a run/long walk after this meal. I will reduce my insulin dosage for this meal to compensate." Don't run after the meal? Bloodsugar goes high. Run after the meal without planning it before the meal? Bloodsugar goes low and you eat.

My initial reaction to the description of this was "oh, somewhat longer-acting Lantus", but it appears that it is actually load-reactive, sort of acting as an artificial pancreas. However, taking only one injection for a week is unlikely to work - the amount of insulin required for a week is far more than is practical for a single injection unless you're a little kid. That said, going down to 1-2 injections per day, and having that insulin react to load, is a MAJOR improvement for diabetics... Especially, as I said before, load-reactiveness.

Ag-Gag Laws Could Make America Sick | Later On

Businesses strongly oppose activities and regulations that expose dangerous practices, corner cutting, and other questionable (and often illegal) activities. Now that they are gaining control of the government, they are trying to make it illegal to expose business wrong-doing. Brandon Keim writes at Wired Science:

A wave of laws that target animal welfare activists who take undercover videos at factory farms has been criticized for chilling free speech and allowing cruelty to continue in secret. But it?s not only animal well-being at issue. So is public health.

Some food safety experts say these so-called ag-gag laws will cloak disease-spreading industry practices, such as processing ill cattle and housing poultry in filthy conditions, in secrecy, raising risks of food contamination.

?The ag-gag laws are touted as preventing animal activists from getting access to private places, but there?s a much broader concern the public should have,? said Elisabeth Holmes, a staff attorney at the nonprofit Center for Food Safety. ?Public health issues, food safety issues, environmental issues: all those things can be exposed through undercover investigations.?

The?first-ever ag-gag prosecution, involving a Utah woman who took roadside videos of cows at a Draper City slaughterhouse, was announced this this week. Charges?were soon dropped, but the incident hinted at a future in which farms are largely hidden from public sight.

Ag-gag laws were passed in Iowa, Missouri and Utah in 2011 and 2012, and submitted for consideration in ten state legislatures ? Arkansas, California, Indiana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Wyoming, and Vermont ? this year. Broadly speaking, they make it illegal to take photographs or videos without farmer consent, though some go further.?Pennsylvania?s proposed law, criminalizes downloading such material over the internet.

The laws have drawn disapproval from many quarters, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Press Photographers Union, who say they threaten public discourse, though most criticisms focus on?abuse of animals?that might go unchecked in the absence of activist attention.

Against these criticisms, farm industry advocates argue that activists often misportray what actually happens on farms, turning isolated incidents into inflammatory narratives of routine abuse that further anti-meat-eating goals. The industry also portrays undercover video-taking as a violation of farmer rights.

?At the end of the day it?s about personal property rights or the individual right to privacy,? said Bill Meierling, a spokesman for the American Legislative Exchange Council, a conservative business group that?drafted the model?for many of the ag-gag laws,?to the Associated Press. ?You wouldn?t want me coming into your home with a hidden camera.?

The nation?s food, however, doesn?t come from people?s homes. It comes from farms ? and in a food system that?s?both vulnerable and productive, with a single burger containing meat from multiple farms, making problems at a single facility a potentially national issue, hidden cameras are often the only cameras. Much of what?s publicly known about factory farms comes from activities that could soon be illegal. . .

It?s amazing to see what are obviously bad-faith or fallacious arguments advanced in favor of the ag-gag laws. If those are the best reasons in favor of the laws, the laws are extremely bad.
