Intel's first smartphone coming soon: Xolo X900 gets April 24 release date

Intel's first smartphone release date

Intel's first Atom smartphone is now available, and it's Lava's Xolo X900. It has managed to outpace both Lenovo's K800 and Orange's Santa Clara and arrives on the Indian carrier next Monday. Packing a 1.6 GHz Atom Z2460 processor, we handled one in Barcelona a few months ago, and were pleasantly surprised with its responsiveness, if not its middling build quality. The four-inch 1024 x 600 display is accompanied by a one-megapixel camera on the front, plus a primary 8-megapixel shooter on the back capable of burst-shot photography. Despite its plastic build, Intel's new mobile offering won't all that cheap; the Xolo X900 by Lava is priced off-contract at around 22,000 INR ($420). At the moment, we're still waiting to hear how Orange and Lenovo will price up their own Medfield-powered offerings -- both are expected to emerge in the next few months.

Dark political satire "Veep" takes aim at Washington

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Selina Meyer is a U.S. vice president whose office has anti-suicide windows, whose boss never calls, and whose jaded press secretary pretends to have a dog (dubbed a 'bull-shitzu') so that he won't have to stay late at work.

Sounds familiar? Armando Iannucci, the creator of HBO's new satirical TV series "Veep", hopes it all rings true because he knows Washington will be watching his cynical view of a political system where idealism has been trumped by compromise and endless damage control.

"Veep", which premieres on Sunday and in a U.S. presidential election year, sees Julia Louis-Dreyfus playing Meyer - a once rising star in an undefined political party who suddenly finds herself U.S. vice president, only to discover the job was everything she was warned about.

She and her frantic Blackberry-addicted team spend their time dodging political minefields, making and fixing public relations gaffes, and waiting for the president to call. He never does.

"I don't want to show Washington as completely dysfunctional but I want to show on a day-to-day basis how it works and what kind of ridiculous pressure politicians are under from the electorate and the media to be perfect and to function 24 hours a day," Iannucci told Reuters.

"Comedy is not there to trivialize it, but to provide a way into it," he said.

Iannucci is the British comedy writer behind Oscar-nominated "In the Loop" which lampooned U.K. politics around the 2003 Iraq invasion. He had considered the U.S. Congress, a governor's mansion and an ambassador's residence before deciding on the office of vice president as his next target.

"The VP can be a powerful position, but only if the president likes you. If the president doesn't like you, then all that power drains away. The VP is also very close to the center of power, but not THE center of power ... So I think there is inherent comedy that on a week-by-week basis, you have no idea where it is going to go," he said.

BLEAK BUT AMUSING

Entertainment Weekly described "Veep" in a review as "a bleak vision of American political folly (that) would be pretty depressing if it weren't so amusing."

Shot in documentary style, partly improvised, and laced with profanities, "Veep" is big on detail - the vast motorcades used to travel a few hundred yards, strategy sessions on the best frozen yogurt flavor choice, clashing egos, and the "walk and talk" beloved by politicians in a hurry.

Iannucci said his team was welcomed by the office of current U.S. vice president Joe Biden, whose staff spoke with producers, and allowed them to photograph and measure their offices.

The show's creator said he was less interested in learning Washington scandal than hearing about "the dull stuff. What time do you get in? How many people are with you when you travel? Who carries this? Who looks after that?"

"A lot of the incidents (in the TV series) are based on things that have happened ... To get the reality of it right, you have to get the detail right. The last thing I want is a whole crowd of Washingtonians to watch it and think 'we don't do that, that doesn't happen'," he said.

Iannucci, 48, may be British - or more precisely Scottish with Italian heritage - but he has always been fascinated by politics on both sides of the Atlantic. Moreover, he notes that American politics "dominates the international agenda".

"I always felt politics was not a noble cause, but an interesting thing to be committed to. But as I got older, I got increasingly frustrated by the way it doesn't work and the way things grind to an absolute log-jam of nothingness," he said.

American TV critics seems to agree. New York Magazine's Matt Zoller Seitz said "Veep" may be "the right satire for a political era marked by stupid feuds, inertia, and superficiality."

Blackberry flagship store coming to Dubai, hopes you'll buy

While RIM's current fortunes are making plenty of execs nervously tug at their ties, there's still plenty of people cheerfully tapping away on BlackBerry keyboards -- especially in the Middle East. It makes at least some sense, then, to launch a big ole' flagship shop in Dubai. Teaming up with local carrier Axiom Telecom, the handset manufacturer is in the final negotiation stages for a 1,500 square-foot store. According to RIM, it's the first of several planned for the region and should mean plenty of places to snap up one of those (reassuringly?) expensive BlackBerry Porsche models on your next overseas trip. Business class, of course.

Google Earth adds balloon and kite aerial imagery, invites you to contribute

Google Earth already offers quite a variety of ways to explore the planet, but the folks in Mountain View never seem content to leave things alone for long. Their latest addition is some aerial imagery of a slightly different sort -- images shot from ordinary balloons and kites. That initial batch of photos comes courtesy of The Public Laboratory for Open Technology and Science, which is itself a grassroots effort that anyone can contribute to. And that's apparently what Google hopes folks will do in order to expand the aerial views available -- as Google notes on its Lat Long blog, all that you need to get started is a digital camera and about $100 in parts, plus a little initiative. Complete details on how to start your own DIY mapping effort, or simply explore the options now available, can be found at the links below.

Windows Server 8 gets a new name, roses retain their sweetness

Image

A wise man once said that names don't matter, because what something's called won't change how mustard tastes. Microsoft has clearly taken that wisdom to its heart, spending two seconds (we hope) in deciding that official title of Windows Server 8 will be... Windows Server 2012. In other news, System Center 2012 -- Microsoft's private cloud software for enterprise users -- is now available for evaluation and purchase. Carry on.

Interview With @SlingshotSEO CRO Jeremy Dearringer ...

I have been on an SEO interview spree as of late and have had the pleasure to interview a few SEOs that I look up to including Mike King and Mike Blumenthal. This has been an awesome experience.

Next up on my list of interviews and another SEO that I look up to is Jeremy Dearringer aka @PapaSlingshot who is the co-founder and Chief Research Officer at Slingshot SEO, an Indianapolis based agency.

I began following Jeremy and his work a few months back and consider him an expert in the field and a must follow for any emerging digital marketer. In my brief conversations with Jeremy leading up to this interview, I was impressed by how willing he was to participate and even more impressed by his great taste in music (further down the interview)?

You can find some of Jeremy?s blog posts here.

(photo above courtesy of Purdue University: Dearringer, left, meets with Indiana Governor, Mitch Daniels)

Craig: For those that don?t follow you or your work, let?s kick this off by having you describe what your role as Slingshot SEO?s CRO entails:

Jeremy: With a fancy title like Chief Research Officer you may think I run a top secret lab with statisticians running correlation studies, regression analysis and unlocking the deepest secrets of SEO. In reality that?s the C level title I took to ensure we left the legitimate C level titles for key hires such as our new CEO, Jay Love, and our COO, Don Kane. I do have a passion for everything Internet marketing and originally I was the guru SEO of the three founders. Today we have individuals with SEO knowledge that surpasses my own. We actually do have a R&D team with a developer, statistician and thought leader that reports in to our Director of SEO Performance. I sit on the board of directors that our C levels report to. My partners and I focus a lot on vision. We?re actually on a vision charter mission right now and are not in the office on a daily basis.

Craig: I know the answer but have to ask, SEO or inbound marketing, and why?

Jeremy: That?s easy, SEO. It?s all semantics really. Inbound Marketing is a term that?s been adopted and made popular by Hubspot. I have no problem with the term, but I bleed SEO. It defines me. Our organization witnesses the value of organic search traffic every single day. At the end of the day it?s our job to optimize any given clients? ability to drive targeted, relevant organic search traffic that creates business impact. Anything and everything we consult on or produce that helps achieve that goal we do in the name of SEO. At Slingshot SEO we focus not only on site architecture recommendations and link building, but we also recommend and engage in social media, content production, topic modeling, ROI tracking, conversion rate optimization, public relations, content marketing and more. For us, today, that is SEO.

Craig: What do you enjoy the most about the SEO industry?

Jeremy: I would have to say the fast paced nature of our industry. There is something new happening EVERY SINGLE DAY. Our SVP of sales, who previously worked for ExactTarget and Compendium, was shocked after working at Slingshot SEO for only a few weeks. He mentioned that ?no one watches the grass grow around here.? It?s inspiring to watch everyone on our team work. We?re over 110 full-time employees large now. The people that work at Slingshot SEO thrive in this fast paced environment. The only constant at Slingshot SEO is change. I remember back to my college education at Purdue University. I had a class that covered change management. We brought in manager after manager from old-school organizations. Employees would get so use to the same old routine that it was a complete shock when the company would make almost any change. The team at Slingshot would laugh if they were forced to go through that class after experiencing what it?s like to work at Slingshot. In summary, the fast paced industry that is SEO keeps me feeling alive every single day.

Craig: How do you think small businesses / small budgets can incorporate something like Coca Cola?s ?Content 2020? into their marketing campaign?

Jeremy: The short answer is that I honestly don?t think 99% of small businesses can. They?d likely fail even if I spent three hours per week consulting with them for free. My father owns a small business, NewProContainers.com. I meet with him and his team for two to three hours every Friday. I try to bring the lessons I?ve learned working with mid-market and enterprise organizations to his company. We try to cover the basics like optimizing content, email marketing, retargeting, branding, blogging, conversion rate optimization, etc. They can?t afford the services my company offers, so I do my best to provide consulting on how to best use their limited resources. Don?t get me wrong, my father?s business is very successful and grows based on their SEO success. They still have a lot of work to do to be where I?d like to see them from an SEO perspective even. Most small businesses are lucky to have two or three people dedicated to marketing in general. You almost never see anyone with a high level of expertise in even one area, such as SEO or Social Media. Small businesses often can?t afford marketers that will grasp Coca Cola?s Content 2020 video, let alone be able to implement it with such limited resources and support staff. The most competent marketers often find their way into an agency, start their own businesses or become part of a large company?s in-house team. The only way I?ve seen this work is when the owner of a small business makes it personal. The owner dives in hard and studies marketing. They take on the role of CMO. With this level of involvement a small business owner will be confident enough to seriously invest in marketing, well beyond the 5% of revenue that?s typical with small businesses. I always laugh when my father tells me I need a better understanding of accounting now that I own a big company. I remind him that I set the curve in my cost accounting class at Purdue. I then proceed to tell him that he needs a better understanding of marketing.

Craig: Where do you see this industry in 5 years? What about 10 years?

Jeremy: Search is forever. I may not be able to predict exactly what devices we may be using to search in the future or what the input/output may look like, but search will never die. Mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad will continue to evolve how we interact with the search process. Assistants like Apple?s Siri give us a taste of what the future of search may look like. Organic search traffic of some sort will always be valuable to organizations that have something to sell, so SEO won?t go anywhere. It will never die, no matter how many bloggers decide to write ?SEO is dead? posts. If anything mobile devices will enable people to search anywhere and everywhere all the time. You see it every day. Your friends and family are searching for stuff mid-conversation or mid-TV commercial on their iPhones.

I think we?ll start to see content marketing in the name of search continue to become a big deal. Creative agencies will be combined with technical SEO experts to craft content strategies around search. Big companies will spend big money to simply market amazing content to create long term search benefit. Right now a lot of companies are still creating entertaining mass advertising with the end goal of brand awareness associated with a few core benefits. Brands will learn to leverage those budgets to promote search ready media so they can experience lasting benefits beyond brand awareness.

The industry will also continue to mature and consolidate. As SEO becomes more of a marketing household term larger agencies will either develop a competency or acquire companies with the ?will to rank?. We?re already seeing most enterprises hiring in-house SEO talent to manage SEO agencies.

Craig: What do you like to do or what are some of your hobbies when you aren?t busy marketing the interwebs?

Jeremy: I?m a movie and concert/show buff. My wife and I see most movies and attend most shows that come through town. Recently we?ve attended the Pink Floyd experience, a Puscifer concert (project by the lead singer of Tool), the Michael Jackson Cirque du Soleil show and will be attending Roger Waters ?The Wall? in June. They?re of the few ways I can actually shut my brain off and detach from work. I?m also a car nut so I spend time watching shows like Top Gear, reading car magazines, shopping for cars on the Internet and modifying the vehicles I have. I also like hanging out with a few close friends to play cards, video games, cookout, etc. I?m not really into big crowds and you?ll rarely find me at a bar or club. Finally if I have any time left over from that I?m likely to build another business. I run a couple eCommerce projects, blogs and a community forum.

I would like to thank Jeremy for taking the time out of his busy schedule to answer my questions and hopefully enlighten SEOs, both up and coming and the more experienced. Here is where you can connect with Jeremy: Google+ | Twitter | Linkedin.

Thank you for reading!

Should I be worried about my skin cancer? | eParis Extra!

by Chris Prakash, MD**

?

Chris Prakash, MD

Q: ??? I had a skin cancer removed from my nose. The dermatologist told me that it is basal cell skin cancer. Should I be worried about it spreading to other organs? Do I need any other treatment besides removing it?

A: ???? Basal cell skin cancer is the most common form of skin cancer in the US. The other types are squamous cell and melanoma. Basal cell cancer is related to exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet radiation. Unlike melanoma, basal cell skin cancer almost never spreads. But, if left untreated, it may grow into surrounding areas and nearby tissues, and can be disfiguring. This is most worrisome around the nose, eyes, and ears.

You did the right thing. You noticed an abnormal skin lesion which was probably growing, and sought medical attention. Surgical removal of the basal cell skin cancer is often all that is required. Of course regular skin check ups would be of paramount importance as well.

What are the risk factors for getting basal cell skin cancer?

  • Freckled skin
  • Blue or green eyes
  • Blond or red hair
  • Close relatives with history of skin cancer
  • Sunburns early in life
  • Long-term daily sun exposure

What does basal cell cancer look like?

Basal cell skin cancer may not look that different from the normal skin. It usually presents as a growth that is painless. You may have:

  • A sore or a red patch or pink growth
  • A skin sore that bleeds easily
  • A sore that does not heal
  • Irregular blood vessels in or around the spot
  • A lesion with a sunken area in the middle

Your doctor will do a biopsy of this lesion, which may then confirm that you have the cancer.

What are the Treatment Options?

  • Excision: Cutting out the skin cancer.
  • Cryosurgery: Freezing the cancer cells, which kills them.
  • Skin creams: Creams containing imiquimod or 5-fluorouracil for superficial (not very deep) basal cell cancer.
  • Mohs surgery: Removing a layer of skin and looking at it immediately under a microscope, then removing many layers of skin until you get negative margins (there are no signs of the cancer). This is usually used for skin cancers on the nose, ears, and other areas of the face.
  • Photodynamic therapy: Treatment using light.
  • Radiation may be used if a basal cell cancer cannot be treated with surgery.
  • The FDA recently approved vismodegib (EVERIDGE), an inhibitor of the Hedgehog Pathway for treatment of basal cell carcinoma, in patients who are not candidates for other treatments.

Is the Prognosis good?

Yes, basal cell skin cancers almost never spread. Most of these cancers are cured when treated early. However, some may return. Therefore it is very important to have regular skin check ups so that any abnormal skin lesions are removed.

How can I prevent skin cancer?

The best way to prevent skin cancer is to reduce your exposure to sunlight. Protect the skin by wearing hats, long-sleeved shirts, long skirts, or pants. Always use sunscreen (SPF at least 15). Look for sunscreens that block both UVA and UVB light.

Major Parkinson's study launched

A Glasgow-based doctor is to lead the world's biggest research study into the cause of Parkinson's disease.

The brain condition affects almost 130,000 people in the UK.

Dr Donald Grosset, a neurologist at Glasgow University, said he hoped to find better ways of both diagnosing and treating the disease.

Charity Parkinson's UK is looking for 3,000 volunteers with the condition - and their siblings - to take part in the study.

Parkinson's is a debilitating condition with symptoms which include tremors, mood changes, movement difficulties, loss of smell and speech problems.

The charity said it was investing more than ?1.6m in the Tracking Parkinson's study with the long-term aim of boosting the chances of finding a cure.

The study will follow 3,000 volunteers - people recently diagnosed with the disease, people diagnosed aged under 50 and their brothers and sisters.

The aim is to identify markers in the blood which could be used to create a simple diagnostic test for the disease, something which does not yet exist.

Finding a cure for Parkinson's is like building a gigantic jigsaw, but we still have a number of the pieces missing?

End Quote Dr Kieran Breen Parkinson's UK

Parkinson's UK said early diagnosis is crucial if doctors are to be able to prescribe the right drugs for people with the condition.

The responses to various treatments of those taking part in the study will be closely monitored for up to five years.

Eventually the project will link up to 40 research centres across the UK.

Dr Grosset said: "The cure for Parkinson's is a global challenge and all the samples gathered from our thousands of volunteers will be available for analysis by researchers the world over.

"This, in itself, will speed up our ultimate goal - to develop a cure for Parkinson's.

"I am very excited to be leading this cutting edge research collaborating with top researchers from Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland."

Dr Kieran Breen, director of research and innovation at Parkinson's UK, added: "Finding a cure for Parkinson's is like building a gigantic jigsaw, but we still have a number of the pieces missing.

"This vital new study will help us fill in some of the gaps in our knowledge."

Manning goes to work with his new team

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) ? Peyton Manning is back in his element, barking out calls, throwing passes and working out with his new teammates. It sure beats watching, wondering and worrying.

He's still finding his comfort zone in Denver after spending 14 seasons in Indianapolis, but Manning is back serving as both quarterback and coach on the football field instead of pacing the sideline and wondering when his neck is going to allow him to return to the huddle.

Manning and his new teammates reported to the Broncos' headquarters Monday morning for the start of the team's offseason conditioning program. After some work in the classroom and weight room, Manning threw passes to his new receivers during some on-field work without the coaches, who aren't allowed to join them outdoors until OTAs start up in May.

"Everybody's been looking forward to this day for some time now," Manning said. "I thought it was a productive first day, but we've got a lot of work to do."

He didn't want to make any rash judgments about his receiving corps and although he said he was pleased with his first official workout since signing a five-year, $96 million deal with Denver on March 20, Manning declined to talk about his health or the progress he's made as he regains his arm strength following a series of neck operations that sidelined him for all of last season and led to his departure from Indy.

"I'm not going to get into these weekly reports. I've kind of been there and done that all fall of last year," said Manning, who is rehabbing under the direction of head athletic trainer Steve "Greek" Antonopulos and new strength and conditioning coach Luke Richesson.

"I'm enjoying being under one roof, being supervised by those two guys," Manning said.

Wide receiver Eric Decker, who has caught more passes from Manning than anyone else over the last month thanks to a series of workouts at local high schools, said the four-time MVP's passes were precise and powerful.

"I'm not his doctor, I don't know how to speak on his health, but catching balls from him, it looks like there's nothing wrong to me," Decker said. "He's throwing great balls, he's getting the work in just like we're getting the work in, knocking the rust off. I see no issues at this point."

Although he's been putting in a lot of miles finding remote high school fields to practice on, Manning said he hasn't really gotten to know his new city yet.

"It's been all business," he said. "Everybody's asking where I'm living. I've been living over here in the facility."

Rehabbing, lifting weights and studying his new playbook.

Manning said he was glad to throw the ball around at team headquarters rather than sneaking around to the local high school fields to play catch with Decker and good friend Brandon Stokley, who signed a one-year deal to return to the Broncos on Monday.

Manning, 36, has always embraced the offseason regimen, and he said he's sure he wasn't the only one who was relieved Monday when NFL teams opened their doors for the voluntary offseason conditioning programs that were scuttled last year by the league's lockout.

"I am (excited), there's no question. I think a lot of players around the NFL will tell you the lockout threw a lot of players off their routine and what they're used to," Manning said. "So, I (like) the fact that everybody's allowed to be in the facility now working out under one roof, we can throw on the field now, right next to the weight room now as opposed to going to a high school. That was what you had to do, but it's nice to be able to do everything here and have some time with the coaches, as well."

Because the coaches can't join them on the practice fields until next month, the players run the on-field portion of the program themselves, and this arrangement is perfectly suited for Manning, who will direct the installation of the Broncos' new no-huddle offense.

Manning, though, said he felt like the new kid in school.

"I think a number of us did. I was with Jacob Tamme and Joel Dreessen, Caleb (Hanie), the same way. We have some new guys. So, I'm learning as we go, as well," Manning said. "Certainly when you get out there on the field and you're throwing passes to receivers, you feel a little more comfortable there, as far as knowing what you're doing a little bit."

Decker said Manning is making everyone around him better because of his famous work ethic, and cornerback Champ Bailey said that goes for Denver's defense, too.

Bailey sent Manning numerous texts during the quarterback's whirlwind free agency tour pleading with him to come to Denver.

"Why? Because he's an amazing player and his leadership alone is bar none the best in the league," Bailey said. "You need a guy like that on your team, and where I want to go, what I want to do toward the end of my career is win a championship and I feel like he gives us the best chance."

Bailey said he puts Manning at the top of the QB list because of the "way he breaks down a defense and pretty much tell you what you're in and half the guys on defense don't even know what we're doing. It's sad but true. You try to trick him as much as possible, but for some reason, somebody always tips him and he knows, he just knows."

Bailey said the Broncos have to be careful they don't take Manning's presence for granted.

"I tell everybody in our defensive room, 'Just because we have a guy like that, it's not going to get easier for us.' We've got to work harder because the expectations are here," Bailey said, holding his right hand high. "He's going to kick our butts in practice, so we've got to be ready to go."

Notes: Manning said he was excited for his little brother, Eli, to host "Saturday Night Live" next month as he once famously did. "I'll be tuned it," Manning said. ... WR Demaryius Thomas was in attendance Monday but he hasn't been working out with Manning like Decker has. Thomas underwent surgery on his left pinky last month to remove a pin that was inserted after it was shattered during a practice in September. ... The Broncos have rescinded their $1.26 million tender for restricted free agent DT Ryan McBean, the Denver Post reported. McBean received a tender at the original (fourth) round level. McBean is facing a six-game drug suspension to start the 2012 season.

Exclusive: Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Priority Was 'Not Dying' In 'Premium Rush'

Gordon-Levitt talks to MTV News about getting in shape for his role as a bike messenger thrown into an 'extreme scenario.'
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Few actors can claim to have a 2012 quite as full of big movies as Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The 31-year-old actor isn't just reteaming with his "Inception" director, Christopher Nolan, for "The Dark Knight Rises," but he's also starring in one of the most talked-about releases of the year, "Looper," and preparing his directorial debut, "Don Jon's Addiction."

On top of all that, this summer he'll headline "Premium Rush," an action film about a bike messenger caught up in a conspiracy.

MTV News spoke with Gordon-Levitt about learning to bike like a pro, acting opposite Michael Shannon and trying not to die in the process.

MTV News: A bike messenger isn't exactly your typical action hero. What was your reaction when you first heard the concept?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt: I just think it's kind of a brilliant idea. It's a summer popcorn action movie. Instead of glorifying cars and gun, it glorifies bicycles. I think that's great.

MTV News: It's kind of refreshingly lo-fi.

Gordon-Levitt: I think that makes the action, in a way, a lot more exciting. There's no computer-generated action in this movie. It's all guys that actually performed these things. I had four doubles in this movie. Every day, I rode all day, but there are four other guys who are good at different things. One of them is an actual bike messenger; he rides really fast in traffic. One of them is really good at riding a trial bike, a different sort of bike, which is good for jumping and stuff. Another guy does tricks but on a fixed gear bike. Another guy's an actual Hollywood stunt man, so he's getting hit by cars. Honestly, when an audience sees a real human being doing things, it's just more exciting than computer-generated, what amounts to a cartoon.

MTV News: How realistic is the biking in this movie?

Gordon-Levitt: It's pretty realistic. It's definitely a fun action popcorn movie, so you know, it's a guy in an extreme scenario. It's not like a slice of life, everyday thing. It's a movie like "Speed" or "Die Hard," where a guy ends up in an extreme situation and has to deal with it. I'm on the bike most of the time. It is a movie that takes place a lot on a bike, of course, not the entire time. It all takes place in one day, and it's a chase movie.

MTV News: How long did you train to get yourself into bike-messenger shape?

Gordon-Levitt: I trained every day for a couple months leading up to this movie. I rode hard every day and all day. That will take it out of you. You have to be in the proper condition to do that kind of thing. I was definitely in really good shape when we were shooting. You can't get to be like what these guys do in a short amount of time. The guys who doubled me, they rode bikes their whole lives and are some of the best in the world. I wasn't doing any crazy tricks or anything like that. That's what the doubles were doing, but I definitely was riding a lot, riding through traffic, riding with cars, riding fast and doing scenes at the same time, performing dialogue and stuff. Those were definitely my favorite scenes to do. The cool thing was that we actually shot it. They would put a camera on the back of a motorcycle and go down the street, and I would ride and perform a whole scene on the phone, riding through traffic. That's a really fun way to do a scene.

MTV News: Where are your priorities when you're acting in a scene like that?

Gordon-Levitt: The priority is not dying. You can do another take and get the scene right, but then it's just about rehearsing enough. Doing line, that's something I'm good at. I can do that easy. It actually makes it more fun, makes the lines come to life more, to put them on a bike like that.

MTV News: Similarly, having Michael Shannon as the villain has to make that character easier to fear.

Gordon-Levitt: Man, that guy! I think he's one of the best going, honestly. When I found out that he was going to play the villain, I was like, "Oh, wow. Now this is a movie." To be perfectly frank, he is by far my favorite part of the movie. Honestly, he is so good. It's definitely worth seeing "Premium Rush" just to see Michael Shannon play this villainous New York cop in an action movie. It's f---ing great.

Check out everything we've got on "Premium Rush."

Charles Manson Parole: Denied!

Infamous mass murderer Charles Manson just lost his latest parole bid ... stunning.

The hearing took place at Corcoran State Prison in California, where Manson, convicted of seven murders in 1969, has now been denied an even dozen times.

At the age of 77, this was probably his last shot at parole, as Sharon Tate's killer's case cannot be heard again for another 15 years from yesterday.

Of course, he was never going to get out anyway, so it's a moot point.

Only one "Manson Family" member convicted of murder has been paroled. Steve Grogan is out, having been released in 1985 for aiding the authorities and good behavior.

Charles Manson was originally sentenced to death row in 1972, but his sentence was commuted after the California death penalty was declared unconstitutional.

Patrick Rochelle: My rage against the machine - The GW Hatchet

What is it about this part of the semester that makes everyone?s computer crash? How is it that all the printers in Gelman seem to go awry in the spring?

And why is it whenever these things happen, it seems our entire livelihoods ? mine included ? are halted until these malfunctions are resolved?

A few weeks ago, my computer broke down while I was writing a paper in the library. I panicked. With two papers due in a couple of days, it was the worst possible time to have my computer malfunction.

I took the computer to the Apple store, thrust the laptop at the employee and frantically begged him to fix it.

Standing a few feet from me was a young woman who was bent over the same table, saying ?thank you, thank you, thank you,? to the man behind the counter. She was overcome with the same emotions ? and she was practically reverential toward the ?genius? that had revived her computer ? as was I.

As dependent as I am on my computer and iPhone, I wouldn?t call myself particularly tech savvy. Many people, including myself, could not fix a computer to save their lives.

It is as though we have become slaves to our own technology.

It is just as Jaron Lanier writes in his book ?You Are Not a Gadget: A Manifesto?. ?A new generation has come of age with a reduced expectation of what a person can be??

In the book, Lanier argues that computers are not our superiors but rather extensions of ourselves ? products meant to push us to our fullest potential, to catapult us into the future.

That is why I fear people give too much credence to technology. Our iPhones and laptops may do a lot of fancy tricks but they are ultimately limited to what we program them to do.

In the future, we can expect computers and technology to play even greater roles in our lives. It might sound like a joke today, but maybe in 10 years, robots will become standard items in every home.

Still, no matter how lifelike technology may seem, we can?t forget that it is only as good as its best programmer.

So the next time my computer crashes in Gelman, I will stop, breathe and remember that the machine is not a representation of my own abilities but rather a device with a few kinks that still need to be worked out.

Until then, I?ll remember to back up my hard drive.

2 USC grad students from China shot dead

By Miguel Llanos, msnbc.com

Two University of Southern California graduate students from China were shot to death in a car overnight in what could be a bungled carjacking, Los Angeles police reported Wednesday.

The victims, a male and a female, were shot?around 1 a.m. local time on a residential street about a mile from campus.

USC later identified the victims as electrical engineering grad students Ying Wu and Ming Qu.

Police were interviewing neighbors and searching the area on Wednesday.

A Los Angeles?police spokesman said a witness saw a man running from the scene, NBCLosAngeles.com reported.

One of the Chinese students shot dead in Los Angeles had run to this home for help.

The male victim was able to stumble onto a nearby porch before collapsing, while the woman was found slumped over inside the vehicle, a late-model BMW, the Los Angeles Times reported.

USC campus police sent out two alerts about?a deadly off-campus?shooting --?one at 6:03 a.m. that reported a shooting, and a second 21 minutes later that stated that a male and female had been shot dead.

The campus was not locked down, though the second alert advised students "to be mindful of their surroundings and review safety tips"?on a USC website page.

USC says 7,200 of its 38,000 undergrad and graduate students in 2011 were international, and that the largest group was from China.

Noltensmeyer Insurance Services, LCC Highlights Top 5 Things ...

Houston, Texas (PRWEB) April 07, 2012

Hurricane season is on its way, and the team at Noltensmeyer Insurance Services wants to make sure that everyone is prepared this year. When it comes to Texas flood insurance, there are a number of misconceptions about who needs it and what these policies cover.

Therefore, Noltensmeyer Insurance Services wants to highlight the top five things that homeowners should understand about flood coverage:

1.

Despite popular belief, Texas home insurance does not include flood protection. Flood insurance must be purchased as a separate policy.
2. Flood insurance does have limits, so homeowners should ensure that the policy they purchase is capped high enough to cover the cost of repairing the structure of the home and replacing damaged contents.
3. There is a 30-day waiting period from the time a person purchases flood insurance to the date on which their coverage starts, so don?t wait until there is a storm in the forecast to obtain flood protection.
4. Paying for flood insurance can save homeowners a substantial amount of money in the long run. A single flood could result in thousands of dollars of necessary repairs ? much more than the cost of securing flood insurance.
5. Individuals can buy flood insurance regardless of whether they live in a high-, moderate- or low-risk zone.

It?s no surprise that homeowners have many questions about Texas flood insurance. As with any other type of insurance policy, everyone will have different flood insurance needs. The team of licensed agents Noltensmeyer Insurance Services is always ready and willing to answer questions on flood coverage and help customers find a policy that is right for them.

About Noltensmeyer Insurance Services, LLC:

Noltensmeyer Insurance Services is licensed in Texas. The 20 agents that comprise Noltensmeyer Insurance Services, LLC write auto, home, commercial and health insurance policies. The agency?s staff is divided into teams to help assist its clients who have specific insurance needs.

Sony To Cut 10,000 Jobs Worldwide: Focus On Core Business, Paring Losses

Consumer electronics and entertainment giant Sony is letting go 10,000 employees, a sixth of its total workforce, in an effort to concentrate resources on core business and bring the company back to black.

According to Bloomberg, around 5000 of the total job cuts will be happening in businesses making chemicals and small-and medium-sized panels. Sony?s website says it has 168,200 employees as of end-March 2011.

Job cuts are becoming a norm in Japan where firms are taking stringent action to trim costs and drastically refocus their businesses. NEC Corp said in January it was cutting 10,000 jobs while Sumco Corp said in February 1,300 jobs would be cut. The continuing crisis in Europe, the weakness in the US market and the strengthening of Japanese yen have hampered the growth of Japan's export-focused companies.

Like us on Facebook

This is not the first time that Sony is going for a large-scale layoff. In December 2008, at the height of the global financial crisis, it had cut 16,000 jobs following a severe slump in demand for its electronic products.

According to Reuters, Sony might request seven executive directors to return their bonuses this time. This follows the announcement of a new management structure in the company and the taking over of Kazuo Hirai as CEO on April 1. It is expected that Hirai will be taking steps to shut down loss-making business and focus on rebuilding the company.

The TV business, which is in poor health, is likely to absorb a significant amount of current job cuts. Hirai, who is expected to provide a brief on business plan this Thursday, has already said that he will be taking painful steps to make the company profitable.

In another major executive move, Kunimasa Suzuki will take over as President and CEO of Sony Mobile Communications effective May 16. Sony Mobile, which has been facing stiff competition in the mobile industry from Apple and Samsung, is reportedly focusing more on smartphones.

The sharp decline in Sony's market share is visible from the fact that its current market capitalization is $20 billion, a breathtaking plunge from $200 billion in 2000. This is much less than that of Apple and Samsung, whose market valuations account for $591 billion and $171 billion respectively. As a refocus strategy Sony is currently partnering with Google for Anrdoid-powered phones and tablets, as well as for Google TV.

In February, Sony posted a third quarter net loss 159 billion yen ($1.95 billion), mainly on account of the worsening market conditions in the developed countries, hostile foreign exchange rates and the floods in Thailand.

Standard & Poor's had lowered Sony's long-term corporate credit and debt ratings to 'BBB+' from 'A-', owing to low probability, enormous price erosion, worsening demand and severe competition. S&P said if no meaningful earnings recovery occurs within 6 to 12 months, the ratings could take a further hit.

At the 3 p.m. close in Tokyo trading, the shares of Sony climbed 0.6 percent to 1,644 yen.
